유아 또래문화로 이해하는 저항의 관계맺기: 솔잎유치원의 질적 사례 연구

국문 초록

이 연구는 유치원 교실의 규칙, 질서, 관습에 저항하는 유아 집단의 모습을 또래문화 관점에서 이해하고자 했다. 교실에서 유아의 저항은 흔히 훈육과 지도 대상이지만 또래문화 관점에서는 어린이 세계의 일부로 읽힌다. 유치원 또래문화를 이해하기 위하여 유치원 참여관찰을 하였고, 수집한 자료는 개방·중추·선택 코딩을 하였다. 자료는 Goffman의 상징적 상호작용론, Corsaro의 또래문화 관점에서 해석하였다. 분석결과 유아의 저항의 관계맺기 특징으로 ‘친구’ 집단은 친구가 아닌 유아를 놀이에서 배제하였고, 인기 놀잇감을 가진 유아는 집중된 권력을 남용하였으며, 교사 몰래 의도적으로 은밀하게 규칙을 위반하였다. 해석 결과 놀이 배제는 침입자에게서 자기네 놀이를 보호하기 위하여, 인기 놀잇감은 권력자와 피권력자, 권력 저항자를 만들었으며, 은밀한 행위는 규율의 감시를 받는 공간에서 주체성을 지키려는 본능으로 이해하였다. 유아 또래문화 이해는 교사에게 유아 행위를 새롭게 해석하고, 사안을 색다른 각도에서 접근하는 안목을 마련해준다.

영문 초록

This study seeks to understand a group of young children who resist the rules, order, and conventions of the kindergarten classroom from a peer culture perspective. In the classroom, their resistance is often the subject of discipline and guidance, but from a peer culture perspective, it is read as part of children's world. To understand kindergarten peer culture, participant observation and teacher interviews were conducted, and the data collected were subjected to open, axial, and selective coding. The data were then interpreted in terms of Goffman's symbolic interaction theory and Corsaro's peer culture perspective. The analysis revealed that the children's resistance was characterized by relational interactions: the “friends” group excluded a non-friend from play, the children with the popular playthings abused their concentrated power, and the children intentionally and covertly broke the rules without the teacher's knowledge. The interpretation was that play exclusion was to protect their play from intruders, popular play created power and powerlessness and power resisters, and sneaky behavior was an instinct to preserve agency in a space under scrutiny. Understanding early childhood peer culture provides teachers with a lens through which to interpret young children's behavior and approach issues from a different angle.
