이콘(ICON, 聖畵) 제작과정에 내재된 치유와 성장의 의미

국문 초록

본 연구는 정형화되고 반복적으로 구현되는 이콘 도상이 어떻게 인간내면에 깊은 울림과 감동을 일으키는 신상(神像)이 되는지 질문하면서 시작되었다. 전승되는 제작방식을 고수하며 같은 상을 복제함에도 각각의 이콘이 고유성을 지닌 성물(聖物)로서 개인을 넘어선 종교적 가치를 갖는 것은 장인의 작업과 유사하게 느껴졌고, 제작과정에 대한 탐구로 이어졌다. 그리고 제작과정에 내재된 체험의 본질과 치유와 성장의 의미를 작가의 체험과 연구자의 경험을 통해 발견하고자 하였다. 이콘은 상을 담을 도판을 준비하는 것부터 금을 입히고 세공하고 그림을 완성하기까지 제작과정 전반에 종교적 상징과 의미가 편재해있다. 따라서 이콘 작가는 전래되는 이콘을 그대로 옮겨내며 그 의미를 묵상하고, 성찰과 기도를 통한 영적 수행을 실천하게 된다. 이 과정에서 작가 개인은 낮아지고 비워지며 이콘은 그리스도교 전례의 한 부분인 성물(聖物)로 이행한다. 따라서 이러한 이행은 탈의, 제의, 직면, 성찰, 해결, 변화, 성장의 순환과정을 담고 있으며, 의례과정의 리미널리티(liminality)에서 체계의 변화를 포함하는 과정임을 발견하였다. 즉, 과거의 나를 포함하는 이전의 현실과 이후에 되돌아갈 현실의 중간영역에서 사회적 지위는 사라지고 본래 있는 그대로의 자기가 회복되며 재통합을 통한 성장이 이루어진다. 이콘 복제과정이 신-형상(神像)아래 개인의 욕구와 개성을 내려놓고 마주하는 상과의 끊임없는 상호작용을 통한 성찰과 수행할 수 있도록 설계되었기에 그 결과물은 그자체로 고유하고 감동과 깊은 경외심을 일으킬 수 있는 것이다. This study began by asking how the Icon image, which is formally and repeatedly embodied, becomes a God image that is deeply resonating within the mind. It is felt that similar to the work of master, each of the Icons has a religious value beyond the individual as a holy object with a unique identity, even though the same way of copying is preserved. I tried to discover the essence of the experience inherent in the Icon painting and the meaning of healing and growth through the experience of the iconographer and the researcher. The Icon is devoted to religious symbols and meaning throughout the drawing process, from preparing the plates for the image, to put gold on, to finishing and to completing the paintings. Therefore, the iconographer will transcribe the traditional Icon and deeply meditate and realize spiritual performance through reflection and prayer. In this process, the individual is humbled and emptied, and the Icon shifts to holy things, a part of the Christian liturgy. Therefore, we have found that this transition includes a process -- the entrance, the ritual preparation, confrontation, reflection, resolution, transformation, and maturation -- and involves a system change in the liminality of the ritual process. In other words, social status disappears in the transitional space of the former reality and the post reality that will return, and one restores oneself as they are and proceeds to grow from the former through reintegration. The process of transcribing the Icon involves reflection and practice through communication with God and the individual on the individual's desires and personalities, and the result is inherent, impressive and deeply reverent.
