한국 교육인류학의 특징에 관한 일 고찰

국문 초록

현재 한국 교육인류학의 정체성을 파악하고 비전을 밝히기 위해서 교육인류학 내외의 맥락 속에서 기원으로부터 현재까지의 형성과정을 이해할 필요가 있다는 문제의식 하에 이 논문은 ‘형성’의 관점에서 한국 교육인류학의 현재, 즉 그 특징을 확인해 보고자 하였다. 특히, 미국 교육인류학의 형성과정을 먼저 이해함으로써 ‘통시적으로’ 한국 교육인류학의 기원을 이해할 뿐만 아니라, ‘공시적으로’ 한국 교육인류학과의 비교를 통해 그 특징을 이해하고자 하였다. 서구 주도 아래 근대학문이 형성,발전된 맥락 속에서 한국 교육인류학은 미국 교육인류학의 ‘선택적 이식’을 통해서 생성되었지만 한국 학문공동체의 탈식민주의적 풍토 속에서 제1기 교육인류학도들은 학문의 ‘토착화’를 중요한 학자적 과제로 삼았다. 또한 교육학의 정체성을 찾고자 하는 교육학과의 담론적 분위기와, 인류학과 교육학의 다른 세부전공과의 긴장관계 속에서 개념정립을 위한 노력이 시작되었고, 교육인류학의 옅은 학자층은 질적 연구와의 필연적 공생을 추구하도록 하였다. 그 결과 한국 교육인류학은 성격상 학문중심적인 ‘인류학적 교육인류학’에서 출발하였으나 ‘교육학적 교육인류학’을 중심으로 점차 미시적 실천의 성격이 강한 학문적 특징을 가지게 되었고, 차이와 경계 속에서 서로의 정체성을 확인하기 위한 연구대상의 개념적 정립이 심화되었다. 이러한 특징을 지닌 한국 교육인류학은 이제 과거와 현재, 교육학과 인류학, 이론과 실제, 그리고 미시와 거시의 변증법적 관계를 딛고 토착적이지만 세계적인 학문으로 도약할 것을 요구받고 있다. Based upon the problem that it is urgent to understand the formative process of Korean anthropology of education (KAE) from its origin to the present within its historical context in order to shed light on its future, this study aims to identify the characteristics of KAE from the historical anthropology perspective of 'formation'. In particular, by understanding the characteristics of anthropology of education in the US, the study aims to compare it presently with KAE, as well as to understand historically the origin of KAE. Like all the modern sciences, KAE is generated by transplanting the US anthropology of education in the Korean academe, in particular, in the department of Education in Seoul National University. However, the postcolonial atmosphere of the Korean academe urged the first Korean anthropologists to settle KAE in a different institutionalized academic framework from that of the US. Also, a very small number of education anthropologists and their students has caused the group to search for symbiosis with qualitative researchers. Results of the study show that KAE started from theory-oriented 'anthropological' AE but had taken on the character of practice-oriented 'educational' AE in time. Encounters with qualitative research methods had also caused KAE to deepen the conceptualization of the phenomena researched (culture and education) for the purpose of identifying the identities of each other in overlapping studies.
