그림책 속 유아의 시선에서 바라본 치매 할머니

국문 초록

본 연구는 그림책 속 유아가 치매에 걸린 할머니를 어떻게 바라보고 있는지에 대해 탐색해보고자 하였다. 이를 위해, 국내에서 제작 및 번역되어 출판되고 있는 그림책들 중 치매(알츠하이머)에 걸린 할머니를 주요 인물로 하며, 유아의 1인칭 시점에서 플롯이 전개되는 13권의 그림책을 선정하였다. 이를 유아의 시선에서 바라본 치매 할머니의 이미지 및 그와의 관계성을 중심으로 분석한 결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 유아는 치매에 걸려 기억이 흐려지는 할머니를 ‘새 할머니’로 인정하고 점차 할머니와의 새로운 관계를 형성하며 지금까지 할머니에게 받았던 애정과 도움을 다시 되돌려주고 갚아주는 것으로 그려진다. 둘째, 유아에게 치매 걸린 할머니는 ‘나와 닮은 할머니’로서 할머니를 자신과 같은 ‘아이’처럼 여겨 더 가깝고 친숙하게 느끼며 다가간다. 셋째, 할머니는 유아 개인 뿐 아니라 가족과 사회, ‘모두와 함께 살아가는 할머니’로 공동체 속에서 관계 맺으며 살아감으로써 유아에게 영향을 주는 것으로 묘사된다. 본 연구는 그림책 속 유아들의 시선에서 치매 노인이 어떻게 이해되고 관계 맺어지는지에 초점을 맞추었다는 데 의미가 있다. 또한 유아, 가족, 지역사회가 더불어 살아가는 공동체적 가치를 실현하고 생태유아교육시스템을 구축하기 위한 기초자료로 활용될 수 있을 것이다.

영문 초록

The purpose of this study was to investigate how demented elderly women are understood from the perspective of children in picture books. For this purpose, among the picture books produced or translated in Korea, 13 books were selected. The results of this study are as follows. First, the child recognizes the grandmother whose memory is blurred due to dementia as a “new grandmother” and gradually forms a new relationship with her, returning the affection and help she had received from her grandmother until now. Second, as a ‘grandmother who resembles me’, the child considers her grandmother to be a ‘child’ like her and therefore feels closer and more familiar. Third, as ‘the grandmother who lives with everyone’, she is understood as one who lives not only with the child but also with the family, the society, and in the community. This study is meaningful because it focuses on how demented elderly people are understood and related to in the perspective of children who have a close relationship with their grandmothers in picture books. It can be also used as basic data for realizing community values that infants, families and communities live together and building ecological early childhood education system.
