생태 여행자의 장소감 형성에 관한 근거이론 연구

국문 초록

이 연구는 생태 여행지를 방문한 관광자의 장소 경험을 탐색하고 장소감 형성과 애착으로 이어지는 과정을 Strauss와 Corbin의 전기적 관점에서의 근거이론으로 분석하고자 하였다. 이를 위해 2024년 2월 11일부터 16일까지 기억에 남는 생태 여행지와 그곳에서의 경험을 주제로 83명의 내러티브 자료를 수집하였다. 개방 코딩을 통해 236개의 개념, 31개의 하위 범주, 그리고 13개의 상위 범주를 도출하였으며, 범주 사이의 관계를 분석하여 생태 여행자의 장소감 형성과정을 패러다임 모형으로 구조화하였다. 분석 결과, 생태 여행자의 장소감은 ‘심층적 장소 몰입을 통한 자연과의 존재적 교감’을 중심으로 형성되었다. 장소감 형성은 신체 기반의 공간 인식과 상호작용에서 비롯되었으며, 생태 여행자는 자연을 존재적 타자로 인식하고, 감정의 정점과 시간⋅공간 왜곡을 경험하면서 장소를 주관적으로 재구성하였다. 이러한 경험은 날씨⋅우연성⋅나 홀로 여행이나 사회문화적 중재 요인에 의해 조절되었으며, 결과적으로 치유와 회복, 자기 성찰로 이어지는 장소의 존재 개입과 장소 의미 부여를 통해 장소를 각인하고 애착을 내면화하였다. 내면화된 장소 애착은 친환경적인 생활 양식이나 생태 여행에 긍정적인 태도로 확장되었으며, 재방문 의도나 의례적 장소 방문과 같은 순환적 행동으로 나타났다. 이는 여행자의 장소감이 단순한 일회적 경험에 그치지 않고 강화⋅반복됨으로써 관광자의 정체성 형성, 지역의 지속가능성 그리고 관광 경험의 전환성과 연결될 수 있다는 점에서 학술적⋅실무적 과제를 제기한다.

영문 초록

This study investigates how visitors experience places in ecotourism settings and analyzes the process by which a sense of place and place attachment are formed, using the grounded theory approach of Strauss and Corbin from a biographical perspective to inductively identify the key categories and relationships underlying these experiential processes. Narrative data were collected from 83 participants between February 11 and 16, 2024, focusing on their memorable ecotourism experiences. Open coding yielded 236 concepts, 31 subcategories, and 13 core categories, which were integrated into a paradigm model of the sense of place formation. The findings reveal that ecotourist’s sense of place is primarily constructed through existential communion with nature via deep place immersion, rooted in bodily–based spatial perception and interaction. Participants perceived the ecological features of destinations as an existential Other, experienced emotional peaks and temporal–spatial distortions, and subjectively reconstructed the place. The visitors’ experiences were moderated by contextual conditions such as weather, coincidence, solo travel, and sociocultural influences. These dynamics fostered place meaning–making and existential engagement, leading to place imprinting and internalized attachment, often accompanied by healing, restoration, and self–reflection. The internalized attachment extended into pro–environmental lifestyles and positive attitudes toward ecotourism, manifested in a cyclical behaviors such as revisit intentions and ritualized place visits. Overall, the study highlights both academic and practical implications by demonstrating that the formation of sense of place goes beyond a single experience. It can be continuously reinforced and re-enacted, linking it to the tourist’s identity formation, destination sustainability, and the transformative potential of tourism experiences.
