국문 초록

이 연구는 16-17세기 生辰祭 문학을 非禮라는 규범과 人情이라는 정서가 충돌하는 독특한 문학 현상으로 보고, 그 대응 양상을 분석했다. 규범과 정서의 긴장 관계에 맞선 문인들의 문학 전략을 유형화함으로써, 이 작품군을 독해하는 하나의 분석 방법을 제시하고자 했다. 이러한 문제의식 아래, 당대 문인들이 구사한 문학 대응은 크게 세 가지 양상으로 유형화할 수 있었다. 먼저, 정당화 전략은 인정을 의리로 변론하는 철학적 논리를 통해 생신제의 정당성을 확보하였다. 다음으로, 우회의 전략은 생신제 실행의 시공간을 논란의 소지가 없는 자신의 생일로 옮겨와 비판을 회피하는 대응을 보여주었다. 마지막으로, 초월의 전략은 예법 논쟁 자체를 무의미하게 만드는 슬픔의 절대성을 전면화하였다. 이 세 가지 전략의 발견은 생신제 문학이 단순한 관습의 기록이 아님을 분명히 한다. 이처럼 규범과 정서의 길항 속에서 작가들이 굴복하지 않고 문학으로 해법을 모색하는 과정 자체가 생신제 문학이라는 고유한 문학 갈래를 형성했음을 논증하려 하였다.

영문 초록

This study analyzes the literature of Saengsinje(birthday memorial rites) from the 16th to 17th centuries, viewing it as a unique literary phenomenon arising from the conflict between the norm of Birye(ritual impropriety) and the emotion of Injeong(human sentiment). By categorizing the literary strategies of writers who confronted the tension between norms and emotions, this study aimed to present an analytical method for interpreting this body of work. From this perspective, the literary responses employed by contemporary writers could be categorized into three main patterns. First, the strategy of justification secured the legitimacy of Saengsinje through a philosophical logic that defended Injeong as a form of moral righteousness(Uiri). Next, the strategy of evasion showed a response that avoided criticism by shifting the time and space of the rite’s performance to the author’s own birthday, a non-controversial occasion. Finally, the strategy of transcendence foregrounded the absolute nature of sorrow, which rendered the ritual debate itself meaningless. The discovery of these three strategies makes it clear that the literature of Saengsinje is not a mere record of custom. This study sought to argue that the very process of writers seeking solutions through literature without succumbing to norms, amidst the antagonism between norms and emotions, is what formed the unique literary genre of Saengsinje literature.
