조선 중기 『陽川世稿』의 편찬 양상과 그 의미 - 가문의식 고조의 흐름과 관련하여

국문 초록

본고는 16세기 이래 본격화된 조선에서의 世稿 편찬 흐름에 주목하고, 그중 陽川 許氏에 의해 수행된 두 차례 『陽川世稿』편찬 기획과 그 현양 양상에 대해 살핀 글이다. 15세기 이래 꾸준히 가문의 역량과 명성을 축적해 온 양천 허씨 집안은, 족보의 편찬을 통해 그 역사를 정리하고 家系를 확립하였다. 그리고 여기에서 한발 더 나아가, 그러한 가문의 명성을 ‘文學’의 측면에서도 드높이고자 16세기 전반 가문 최초의 세고를 편찬해 내었다. 이는 16세기 후반에 등장해 높은 文名을 획득하였던 許曄 부자가 차례로 등장함에 따라 續集의 편찬으로도 이어졌다. 조선 중기에 만들어진 두 차례의 『양천세고』는, 기본적으로 그들 가문의 일원이 정계·문단에서 가장 영향력을 발휘하고 있던 시기에 제작되었다. 前集과 續前集을 각각 기획한 16세기 전반의 許洽·許沆 형제, 17세기 초의 許筬·許筠 형제 모두 당시 중앙 무대에서 적지 않은 위상을 지닌 존재들이었다. 아울러 이들은 공통적으로 당시 조선에 파견된 明 사신에게서 서문을 받아 세고의 첫머리를 장식하였다. 이는 곧 당대까지 이룩된 가문의 문학적 명성을 명나라에까지 공인받음으로써 그 위상을 대외적으로 과시하고자 하였던 허씨 가문의 심사를 잘 보여준다. 무엇보다 16세기 전반에 이미 한 차례 수행된 편찬·기념 방식을 후대에 거의 같은 모습으로 차용한 ‘현양의 재현’은, 조선 중기에 보이는 다양한 세고 편찬 사례 중에서도 특별한 것이라 할 수 있다. 『양천세고』에서 간취되는 이와 같은 편찬 양상은, 조선 초부터 꾸준히 축적되어 온 文治의 성과와 文運 진작에 대한 자부심이 세고 편찬이라는 흐름과 연결되고, 그러한 흐름에서 비롯된 가문 현양의 의지가 하나의 극적인 지점에까지 도달하였음을 보여주는 선명한 사례가 된다.

영문 초록

This thesis focuses on the flow of compilation of sego(世稿) in Joseon that began in the 16th century, and examines the two compilation projects of the 『Yangcheon-Sego(陽川世稿)』 carried out by Yangcheon Heo clan(陽川 許氏). Yangcheon Heo clan, which had steadily accumulated clan power and reputation since the 15th century, compiled a genealogy to organize its history and establish its lineage. And they sought to elevate their reputation to literary prominence, compiling the family's first sego in the early 16th century. This led to the compilation of sequel, as the Heo Yeop(許曄) family emerged in the late 16th century and achieved high literary fame. The two volumes of 『Yangcheon-Sego』compiled in the mid-Joseon period were essentially produced during a period when members of their clans wielded the most influence in politics and literature. Heo Heup(許洽) and Heo Hang(許沆) brothers in the early 16th century and Heo Seong(許筬) and Heo Gyun(許筠) brothers in the early 17th century were both figures of considerable stature on the central stage of their time. Furthermore, they both received a preface from the Ming(明) envoy dispatched to Joseon at the time. This clearly demonstrates the Heo clan's desire to externally demonstrate its literary prestige by having it recognized by Ming. Above all, this is a special case among the various examples of compilation that took place in the mid-Joseon period, in that it is a “reproduction of commemoration” that borrowed the method that had already been carried out once in early 16th century. The various aspects seen in the 『Yangcheon-Sego』are clear examples of how the pride in the achievements of civilization that have been steadily accumulating since the early Joseon were strongly connected to the flow of compilation of sego, and how the will to glorify the clan that arose from such a flow reached a dramatic point.
