통일신라 <華嚴石經> 복원에 관한 提言 - 기존 연구 분석 및 연구 방향 설정에 관하여

국문 초록

통일신라 <화엄석경>은 화엄사의 장육전 내부를 장엄하고 있다가 두 차례의 왜란으로 산산이 부서졌고 지금은 극히 일부인 만여 조각만이 남아 있다. 지금까지 여러 차례 복원을 위한 시도가 있었고 그에 따른 연구가 꾸준히 계속되고 있다. 본고에서는 기존 <화엄석경>에 대한 연구에 대해 살펴보고 <화엄석경> 복원을 위한 연구에 어떤 어려운 점이 있는지 확인해보았다. 그 결과 통일신라시대의 <화엄석경> 저본은 고려재조대장경본과 다르다는 것, 석경의 서사체재가 큰 틀에서는 규칙이 있지만 세세한 부분에서는 가변적인 것, 남아 있는 석경 편들이 적다는 것과 남아 있는 편들이 전체적으로 고르게 분포되어 있지 않다는 것 등이 석경의 복원의 난점이라는 것을 알 수 있었다. 이런 점들을 파악해 앞으로 복원을 위한 연구 방향을 설정해 보았다. 먼저 석경편들의 분류와 보관 방향에 대한 논의와 흩어져 있는 자료를 모으는 작업 그리고 비슷한 시기의 진본 화엄경의 확보가 필요하다. 그 후 확보된 자료를 통해 편들의 자세한 위치를 파악하고 어떻게 복원할 것인가에 대한 논의도 필요하다. <화엄석경>의 복원은 매우 지난한 작업이 될 것이다. 거기에 본고가 <화엄석경>의 복원에 길잡이가 되길 바란다.

영문 초록

The Hwaeom Seokgyeong (Stone Sutra of the Avataṃsaka Sūtra), which once adorned the interior of the Jangyukjeon Hall at Hwaeomsa Temple, was severely damaged during two Japanese invasions, leaving behind only approximately 10,000 fragments. Although multiple attempts have been made to restore the sutra, and related research has continued over the years, the restoration remains a significant challenge. This study reviews previous research on the Hwaeom Seokgyeong and identifies key difficulties in the restoration process. These include discrepancies between the Hwaeom Seokgyeong text from the Unified Silla period and the Tripitaka Koreana version from the Goryeo dynasty, inconsistencies in the narrative structure at the micro-level despite an overarching order, the limited number of surviving fragments, and the uneven distribution of the extant pieces. Based on these findings, this paper proposes future directions for restoration research: establishing a classification and preservation system for the fragments, collecting scattered fragments, and securing authentic versions of the Avataṃsaka Sūtra from comparable periods. Further study is also needed on identifying the precise arrangement of the fragments and discussion determining appropriate restoration methods. The restoration of the Hwaeom Seokgyeong will be a highly arduous and complex undertaking. It is hoped that this study will serve as a meaningful guide for future restoration efforts.
