국문 초록

본 논문은 옥동 이서(玉洞 李漵, 1662-1723)의 자득미학(自得美學)을 중심으로, 자득 개념이 유가 성리학의 철학 구조 속에서 어떻게 정당화되며, 동시에 道統 및 書統의 창의적 계승과 어떠한 방식으로 조화를 이루는지를 고찰한다. 이서는 주자학의 ‘性卽理’ 사유에 기반하여, 인간의 본성에 내재한 理를 敬의 수양을 통해 발현하고자 하였다. 그는 서예를 단순한 小技가 아닌 書道로 이해하였으며, 自得의 방법을 통해 道를 체득함으로써 서예 속에 天道를 구현하고자 하였다. 본 연구는 이러한 자득 개념이『中庸』의 時中 『周易』의 中正, 성리학의 經權論, 그리고 왕희지를 중심으로 한 書統 인식과 어떻게 긴밀하게 연결되는지를 분석하였다. 이를 통해 자득은 道統의 외재적 계승이 아닌 내면화의 실현이며, 형식과 창의, 규범과 자율이 충돌 없이 통합될 수 있음을 논증한다. 더 나아가 이서의 자득은 예술적 표현과 도덕적 수양을 통합함으로써, 유가 예술론 내에서 주체성과 창의성의 도덕적 정당화를 가능하게 하는 심법 구조를 제공한다. 이러한 점에서 그의 자득 미학은 조선 후기 유가 예술 철학의 전개를 이해하는 데 중요한 단초를 제공한다.

영문 초록

The present study focuses on the aesthetics of self-attainment (自得) in the thought of Okdong Yi Seo (玉洞 李漵, 1662-1723), examining how the concept of self-attainment is philosophically justified within the structure of Confucian Neo-Confucianism, and how it harmonizes with the creative succession of the Dao lineage (道統) and the calligraphic lineage (書統). Based on the Cheng-Zhu school’s idea of “nature is identical with principle” (性卽理), Yi Seo sought to manifest the principle (理) inherent in human nature through the cultivation of reverence (敬). He regarded calligraphy not merely as a minor technical skill (小技), but as the Dao of Calligraphy (書道), and aimed to embody the Heaven’ Dao(天道) in calligraphy by realizing the Dao(道) through the method of self-attainment. This paper analyzes how the notion of self-attainment is closely connected to the concept of timely appropriateness (時中) in the Doctrine of the Mean (中庸), the idea of balanced correctness (中正) in the Book of Changes (周易), the Neo-Confucian theory of balancing principle and expediency (經權論), and Yi Seo’s perception of the calligraphic lineage centered on Wang Xizhi. It argues that self-attainment is not the external succession of the Dao lineage, but the internal realization thereof, and that form and creativity, as well as norm and autonomy, can be integrated without conflict. Furthermore, Yi Seo’s self-attainment integrates artistic expression with moral cultivation, providing a mind-method (心法) structure that enables the moral justification of subjectivity and creativity within Confucian art theory. In this respect, his aesthetics of self-attainment offers an important clue to understanding the development of Confucian art philosophy in late Joseon Korea.
