국문 초록

동양의 평면예술에서 인장은 작품의 완성을 의미하는 중요한 요소이자 작가의 개성과 예술적 지향을 표현하는 수단이 된다. 서예가 인영선은 전각의 가치를 중요하게 인식하였으며 다양한 인장들을 소장하고 작품에 적극적으로 활용하였다. 그가 평생 애용했던 인장들은 단지 서예작품을 마무리하는 도구를 넘어 그와 긴밀한 관계를 맺었던 수많은 서예ㆍ전각가들과의 예술적 교유를 상징하는 징표로서 의미를 지닌다. 인장은 사용자가 사망하면 더 이상 인장으로서의 공능이 사라진 유물이 되고 만다. 그러나 서화가가 남긴 인장 유물은 한 작가의 전각에 대한 인식을 확인할 수 있는 도구이자 인적 교유관계의 징표가 되며, 남은 작품들의 진위를 증명하는 중요한 수단이 되기도 한다. 최근 취묵헌 인영선 자용인장(自用印章)의 전모를 촬영하고 네 권의 인보(印譜)로 제작하면서 총 144과 149방의 전각이 확인되었다. 인영선이 사용했던 인장들은 크게 자각인(自刻印)을 비롯하여 전배와 동년배, 후배, 제자들, 그리고 중국 전각가들의 각인을 포함하고 있었다. 한 작가가 전각을 통해 교유한 삶의 흔적들이 고스란히 유물로 남은 셈이다. 이 논문은 인영선의 자용인장들을 시기별, 작가별로 분류하고 분석하여 그가 남긴 전각이 지닌 서예·전각사적 의미를 확인한다. 그리고 선생의 사적 교유의 맥락에서 전각이 갖는 의미를 고찰한다. 인영선의 자용인장들은 단지 개인의 예술적 기록물에 그치지 않고 한국 현대 서예 및 전각 예술의 흐름을 살필 수 있는 동시에 동시대 예술가 간의 긴밀한 교유의 증표로서 그 의미가 크다 하겠다.

영문 초록

In East Asian planar art, seals are an essential element signifying the completion of a work, as well as a medium through which the artist’s individuality and artistic orientation are expressed. Calligrapher In Young-seon, known by his art name Chwimukheon(醉墨軒), recognized the importance of seal engraving and collected a wide variety of seals, making active use of them in his works. The seals he favored throughout his life were not merely tools to finish calligraphic pieces, but also symbolic markers of his artistic exchanges with numerous calligraphers and seal engravers with whom he maintained close relationships. A seal loses its functional role upon the death of its owner, becoming merely an artifact. However, the seals left behind by an artist serve as valuable evidence of the artist’s perception of seal engraving, as indicators of personal networks, and as important tools for verifying the authenticity of remaining works. Recently, In Young-seon’s personal seals(自用印章) were photographed and compiled into four volumes of seal catalogues(印譜), revealing a total of 144 carved seals in 149 imprints. The seals used by In Young-seon include not only his own carvings but also works by his seniors, peers, juniors, disciples, and Chinese seal engravers. The traces of a life enriched through exchanges in the art of seal engraving are thus preserved intact in these seal relics. This paper classifies and analyzes In Young-seon’s personal seals by period and by engraver, examining their significance in the history of calligraphy and seal engraving. Furthermore, it explores the meaning of seal engraving within the context of the artist’s personal interactions. In Young-seon’s personal seals are not merely private artistic records; they hold great value as materials for tracing the trends of modern Korean calligraphy and seal engraving, and as tangible symbols of the close bonds among contemporary artists.
