발달장애 아동 아버지의 자녀 언어치료 경험에 관한 현상학적 연구

국문 초록

본 연구의 목적은 발달장애 아동 아버지의 자녀 언어치료 경험을 이해하는 것이다. 이러한 연구목적을 달성하기 위해 본 연구 기준에 충족하고, 적극적으로 참여 의사를 밝힌 대상자 5명을 연구참여자로 선정하였다. 연구 방법은 Giorgi현상학적 연구 방법을 적용하였고, 그 결과 5개의 본질, 13개의 구성요소, 33개의 하위 구성요소가 도출되었다. 연구를 통해 나타난 의미는 다음과 같다. 아버지들은 ‘자녀의 장애와 마주침’으로, 언어에서 드러나는 자녀의 이상함을 감지함으로써 언어치료의 필요성을 절감하였고 지체없이 언어치료를 시작하였으나, 장애의 벽으로 인한 한계를 경험하였다고 말한다. 이후 자녀가 발달장애 진단을 받게 되면서 현실과 마주한 나, 자녀를 위한 온전한 희생을 하게 되어 ‘아버지의 사명과 무게’를 감당하게 된다고 한다. 이후 아버지들은 ‘갈등의 연속’으로, 발달장애 자녀가 타인에게 소통하려 발버둥 치는 모습을 볼 때면 아버지로서 괴로움과 걱정이 앞선다고 한다. 또한 업무나 개인적인 일들로 인해 비장애 자녀 또는 부모님에게 맡기는 상황이 되면 미안한 마음과 절망감에 빠진다고 말한다. 그러나 언어치료 효과를 경험하면서 ‘달라지는 마음가짐’을 갖게 된다고 한다. 작은 표현이지만 자녀와 소통이 되는 기쁨, 자녀를 위해 반복훈련을 할 수 있는 힘을 얻게 되고 옆에서 견뎌주는 아내에게 고마움을 느낀다고 말한다. 마지막 ‘언어치료와 함께 나아가기’로, 발달장애 자녀가 타인에게 의사 표현을 정확하게 전달하는 것을 최종 목표를 가지며 치료에 성실히 임하는 자세를 취한다고 한다. 언어치료는 아버지와 발달장애 자녀의 삶을 바꿔주고 바람직한 부모교육을 받을 수 있는 좋은 기회, 보통의 교육이 아닌, 특별한 교육이라 하였다. 본 연구의 주요 연구 결과에 대한 논의와 실천적 시사점을 제시하였다.

영문 초록

The purpose of this study is to understand the experiences of fathers of children with developmental disabilities in relation to their children's language therapy. To achieve this objective, five participants who met the inclusion criteria and expressed a strong willingness to participate were selected. The study employed Giorgi’s phenomenological research method, which resulted in the derivation of five essences, thirteen constituents, and thirty-three sub-constituents. The analysis revealed several key themes. Fathers initially recognized their child’s need for language therapy upon noticing abnormalities in language development and began therapy without delay. However, they encountered limitations due to the barriers imposed by the disability. Upon receiving a formal diagnosis for their child, the fathers confronted a new reality and took on the full responsibility and sacrifice associated with “the mission and weight of fatherhood.” They also experienced “a series of conflicts,” feeling distress and concern when witnessing their child's struggle to communicate with others. Feelings of guilt and despair were reported when caregiving responsibilities had to be delegated to non-disabled siblings or grandparents due to work or personal obligations. Despite these challenges, fathers developed “a changed mindset” through observing the positive effects of language therapy. They expressed joy in being able to communicate with their child, strength gained from engaging in repetitive practice, and gratitude toward their supportive spouses. Lastly, under the theme of “moving forward with language therapy,” the fathers showed a sincere and dedicated attitude toward therapy, aiming for their children to be able to express themselves clearly to others. They regarded language therapy as a transformative process that not only changed their lives and those of their children, but also served as a valuable opportunity for meaningful and specialized parental education—education that is not ordinary, but extraordinary. This study concludes with a discussion of the main findings and their practical implications.
