국문 초록

This research revisits the article “A Study on the Valency of Arabic Verbs” published in the Korean Journal of Middle East Studies (1999), with the aim of correcting its errors, addressing its shortcomings, and supplementing its arguments. In particular, it investigates the shifts in dominance that determine verb valency. The study argues that distributionalism alone has limitations in explaining the changes in verb forms and syntactic structures within a sentence. Therefore, a proper analysis of Arabic sentences requires a clear understanding of both the structural and semantic properties of verbs. This research examines how verb valency varies according to the dominance relations among sentence constituents. Even when a verb maintains the same form, its dominance may differ depending on whether a preposition is added or omitted. Such variation is attributable to the lexical capacity of verbs to allow al-taḍmīn (“inclusion of another meaning”) or to accept changes in word order. When a transitive verb is used with a meaning other than its original one, a preposition may be added according to its sense, which can result in its surface appearance as intransitive. Similarly, when a change in word order weakens the dominance of the verb, a transitive verb may function as though it were intransitive. Conversely, an intransitive verb can also take on transitive usage, either because of its polysemous semantic features or due to al-taḍmīn. It should be noted that al-taḍmīn applies in both directions: when a transitive verb functions intransitively and when an intransitive verb functions transitively. To explain the latter, this research adopts the concept of an “accusative with omitted preposition.” Intransitive-to-transitive usage appears, for example, when a possessive suffix pronoun following a preposition functions as a direct object, or when verbs such as “enter”, “live”, and “pass by” precede non-derived place nouns. It can also arise when the preposition before the complementizers أَنَّ and أَنْ is omitted. However, when such omission would lead to ambiguity, the preposition is retained. The phenomenon of the “accusative with omitted preposition” likewise occurs when verbs have polysemous meanings.
