국문 초록

19세기 중반부터 이탈리아 피렌체에 있는 카페 미켈란졸로에서는 새로운 예술을 추구하는 일련의 무리들이 모여들어 치열한 예술적 토론을 나누었다. 여기에는 당대 이탈리아의 젊은 예술가들뿐만 아니라 에드가 드가를 비롯한 프랑스 파리의 예술가들도 모여들어 양국 간의 예술적 지향점에 대한 교류가 일어났다. 여기에 모여든 예술가들을 마키아이올리라고 불렀는데 그 중에서도 이론가였던 디에고 마르텔리는 총 네 번의 파리 방문을 통해 자신들과 프랑스 파리의 인상주의 화가들과의 유사성과 차이점을 검토하고 보다 진보적이었던 인상주의 화가들 중 카미유 피사로의 작품들을 피렌체로 들여오는데 이는 이탈리아에 최초로 인상주의 그림이 도착한 예시였다. 인상주의와 마키아이올리들은 분명 여러 가지 면에서 유사점과 차이점이 존재하지만 인상주의가 동시대 전지구적으로 나타났던 동일한 회화적 지향점의 대표성을 띄는 이유 중 하나로 비즈니스적인 면도 고려해야 할 것이다.

영문 초록

From the mid-19th century, the Caffè Michelangiolo in Florence became a gathering place for a group of artists seeking to explore new directions in art. These meetings were marked by intense artistic debates, attracting not only young Italian artists of the time but also figures from Paris, including Edgar Degas. This interaction facilitated an exchange of artistic ideas and objectives between Italy and France. The artists who convened at the Caffè Michelangiolo became known as the Macchiaioli. Among them, the theorist Diego Martelli played a crucial role in bridging the gap between his group and the Impressionists in Paris. Through four visits to Paris, Martelli examined the similarities and differences between the Macchiaioli and the French Impressionists. Notably, he introduced Camille Pissarro’s works to Florence, marking the arrival of Impressionist art in Italy for the first time. While Impressionism and the Macchiaioli share both similarities and differences in their approaches, it is essential to consider the business-oriented aspects of Impressionism when understanding why it emerged as a representative global movement in painting during its time.
