Messenger Phishing Modus Operandi in South Korea

국문 초록

본 연구의 목적은 한국 메신저 피싱의 수법을 파악하여 예방 대책을 제시하는 것이다. 메신저 피싱은 범죄자가 메신저 대화를 통해 피해자를 속여 이득을 취하는 범죄로 그 피해가 나날이 증가하고 있는 현실이다. 이처럼 메신저 피싱의 심각성에도 불구하고, 기존 연구들은 피싱이 발생하는 과정 및 수법에 대해 명확히 다루지 않고 있다. 따라서, 본 연구에서는 이러 한 공백을 메우기 위해 인터넷 상에서의 메신저 피싱 사례를 수집한 후, 내용 분석 기법과 범죄스크립트 분석 기법을 활용하여 사례들을 분석하였다. 연구 결과, 메신저 피싱의 수법은 준비 단계, 구체적인 계획을 수립하는 단계, 신원을 밝히지 않은 채 피싱 메시지를 보내는 단계, 상황의 긴급한 정도를 설명하는 단계, 목표 대상에게 금전을 요구하는 단계, 목표 대상의 금전을 확보하는 단계로 구성되어있는 것으로 나타났다. 특히, 범죄자가 목표 대상의 금전을 확보하기 위해 사용하는 기법은 크게 4가지로 범죄자가 지정한 계좌로의 송금을 요구하는 기법, 상품권 구매 후 핀 번호를 요구하는 기법, 목표 대상 의 스마트폰에 원격제어 앱을 설치하도록 유도하는 기법, 민감한 정보를 요구하는 기법으로 나타났다. 이에 따라 본 연구에서는 이러한 결과를 바탕으로 상황적 범죄예방 기법에 기반한 메신저 피싱 예방 대책을 제시하였다.

영문 초록

The purpose of this study is to identify the messenger phishing modus operandi in South Korea. Messenger phishing is a serious crime in which offenders make profits by deceiving victims through messenger conversations, and the damage is increasing each day. Despite the seriousness of messenger phishing, existing research has not clarified the sequence of processes by which it occurs. To fill this gap, the researchers collected messenger phishing cases in open spaces to secure a sufficient number of vivid damage cases and employed content analysis and crime script analysis. The findings demonstrated that the messenger phishing modus operandi consists of preparation, developing specific plans, sending a phishing message without revealing one’s identity, explaining the urgency of the situation to the target, requesting money from the target, and acquiring the target’s money. In particular, there were four main techniques used by criminals to acquire the target’s money: requesting remittance to the account presented by the offender, requesting PINs for gift certificates after their purchase, inducing installation of a remote-control application on the target’s smartphone, and requesting sensitive information. Further, based on these results, this study suggested preventive measures against messenger phishing using situational crime prevention techniques.
