한반도 최초의 근대 신문 『조선신보(朝鮮新報)』의 근대성 검토 - 기사 제공 방식을 중심으로

국문 초록

본고는 한반도 최초의 근대 신문이라 할 수 있는 『조선신보』의 기사 제공 방식을 살펴보았다. 이는 궁극적으로 『조선신보』가 한반도에서 근대 인쇄술로 간행된 최초의 신문이라는 점 이외, 근대 신문으로서 갖추고 있는 근대성에 대해 검토하고자 한 것이다. 『조선신보(朝鮮新報)』는 1881년 12월 10일, 부산에서, 일본 상인이 중심이 되어 설립한 재부산항 상법회의소에서 간행한 한반도 최초의 근대 신문이다. 우리나라 최초의 근대 신문이라 불리는 『한성순보』보다 1년 10개월 정도 먼저 창간되었으나, 일본인에 의해 간행되었기에 우리나라 최초의 근대 신문이라고 칭하는 것에 대해선 여전히 논란이 있다. 하지만 우리나라에서 최초로 근대식 인쇄술로 간행된 정기간행물임은 틀림없다고 하겠다. 일반적으로 근대 신문은 활판 인쇄술을 기반으로 한 정기간행물로, 기사ㆍ논설ㆍ광고를 포함하고, 대중을 독자로 상정하며, 언론으로서 공론장을 형성하는 것을 일컫는다. 이런 측면을 비춰보면, 『조선신보』는 근대식 활자로 간행되었고, 10일에 한 번씩 정기적으로 간행되었으며, 사설과 독자투고란, 그리고 광고를 포함하고 있고, 조선인과 일본인을 독자 대상으로 상정하고 있으며, 언론으로서 공론을 형성하였기에, 근대 신문으로서의 면모를 갖추었다고 하겠다. 그러나 기사 제공 방식은 여전히 근대 신문으로서의 객관성과 공공성을 갖추지 못한 면모가 있다. 첫째, 편집자 의도에 맞는 편파적 내용의 기사를 제공한 점. 둘째, 편의를 위해 기사의 일부만을 보여주거나 변용하여 보도한 점. 셋째, 사실 전달의 객관성을 의심케 하는 불확실한 제공자의 정보를 제공한 점. 넷째, 사소한 오류와 빈번한 오탈자가 보인다는 점 등이 그것이다. 이런 면모는 『조선신보』가 근대 신문으로서 근대성을 온전히 갖추지 못하였음을 보여주는 것이라 하겠다. 본고는 『조선신보』 기사의 내용적/형식적 측면을 분석하여, 근대 신문으로서 충족된 면모와 부족한 면모를 구체적으로 살펴보았다. 『조선신보』는 근대 신문으로서의 조건을 대체로 충족하고 있지만, 기사 제공 방식에서는 여전히 근대성이 충족되지 못한 면모를 가지고 있다고 하겠다.

영문 초록

『ChosunSinbo(朝鮮新報)』 was published by Japanese in Busan in December 10, 1881, the first modern newspaper on the Korean Peninsula. It was founded about a year and 10 months before 『HansungSunbo(漢城旬報)』 which is called the first modern newspaper in Korea. In general, modern newspapers are periodicals based on typography, including articles/anotes/advertisements, assuming the public as readers, and forming a public forum as a media. If you look at it according to this standar, 『ChosunSinbo』 was published by modern printing, regularly published every 10 days, including editorials, reader posts, and advertisements, assuming Koreans and Japanese as readers, and forming public opinion as a media, so it has the appearance of a modern newspaper. However, there are still some parts of the way articles are provided that do not have the appearance of modern newspapers. First, we provided articles with biased content that fit the editor's intentions. Second, only part of the article was shown or transformed for convenience. Third, we provided information from uncertain providers that made us doubt the objectivity of conveying the facts. Fourth, there are many minor errors and typos. This aspect is a factor that lacks the publicity and objectivity that a modern newspaper should have. In the end, this paper is a process of examining the degree to which the 『ChosunSinbo』 has secured modernity as the first modern newspaper on the Korean Peninsula. To this end, by analyzing the content/formal aspects of the 』 articles of 『 Chosun Sinbo, we were able to examine in detail the aspects of modern newspapers and the aspects that are insufficient to be called modern newspapers.
