소려(小黎) 송백옥(宋伯玉)의 산문 비평 연구 - 『동문집성』과 『동문집속』의 평비(評批)를 중심으로

국문 초록

본고는 조선 후기의 대표적 선문가(選文家)인 송백옥(宋伯玉, 1837~1887)이 편찬한 『동문집성(東文集成)』과 『동문집속(東文集續)』에 수록된 평비(評批)를 중심으로, 그의 산문 비평의 특징과 양상을 고찰한 연구이다. 먼저 두 선집의 편찬 경위, 체재, 그리고 편찬 참여자의 구성을 고찰하여 송백옥의 선문 작업이 단순한 선집 편찬을 넘어 도덕적 기준과 문단의 공론(公論)을 반영한 비평적 작업이었음을 밝히고자 하였다. 송백옥은 공론을 존중하되 그대로 수용하는 데에 그치지 않고, 기존 문단 비평을 인용·재구성하고, 작가에 대한 호오(好惡)를 선집의 내용(문초인과 평비)과 형식(체재와 호칭) 등을 통해 섬세하게 드러냈다. 이어 송백옥이 이색·남구만·허목·황경원 등 주요 문장가의 작품에 대해 부기한 評과 批를 분석함으로써, 그의 비평이 유교적 의리와 성리학적 사유, 문체적 완성도, 감동적 표현력 등 다양한 평가 기준에 근거하고 있음을 밝히고자 하였다. 특히 그는 문학적 호오를 넘어서 객관성과 균형감을 유지하려 하였으며, 문단 비평을 수용하고 재해석하는 능동적 태도를 통해 비평가로서의 면모를 드러냈다. 본고에서는 송백옥의 評批가 단순한 감상이 아닌 조선 후기 문학 담론의 일환으로 규명하며, 더 나아가 현전하는 『명대가문선(明代家文選)』·『청대가문선(淸大家文選)』에 나타나는 평비 및 권점(圈點)과의 비교를 통해 송백옥 산문 비평의 방법론을 더욱 입체적으로 규명할 가능성을 후속 과제로 제시하였다.

영문 초록

This study examines the characteristics and modes of prose criticism by Song Baek-ok (宋伯玉, 1837-1887), a representative anthologist of late Joseon Korea, focusing on the commentaries (pyeong, 評) and marginal comments (bi, 批) included in his anthologies Dongmunjipseong (東文集成) and Dongmunjipsok (東文集續). First, by analyzing the compilation process, structure, and contributors of the two anthologies, this paper reveals that Song Baek-ok’s editorial work went beyond simple selection; it was a critical endeavor grounded in moral standards and ‘public consensus’ (gongnon, 公論) of the Joseon literary circles. While Song Baek-ok respected the literary consensus of his time, he did not accept it passively. Instead, he selectively appropriated, reinterpreted, and restructured existing literary criticism, subtly expressing his personal preferences or aversions through the content (prefaces and commentaries) and the formal composition of the anthologies. Through a close analysis of the comments Song appended to the works of major writers such as Yi Saek, Nam Gu-man, Heo Mok, and Hwang Gyeong-won, the paper argues that his evaluative criteria were multifaceted, encompassing Confucian moral values, Neo-Confucian philosophical orientation, stylistic sophistication, and the emotive or rhetorical impact of prose. Notably, Song Baek-ok maintained a critical balance between subjective sentiment and objective literary judgment, demonstrating an active and discerning engagement with prior literary discourse. This paper argues that Song Baek-ok’s pyeong-bi (評批) functioned not merely as critical marginalia but as a form of critical discourse in the late Joseon literary field. It further suggests that a comparative analysis of Myeongdaegamunseon (明大家文選) and Cheongdaegamunseon (淸大家文選), which also contain Song Baek-ok’s annotations and critical textual marks (gwonjeom, 圈點), will offer deeper insights into the methodology and evolution of Song’s prose criticism.
