독립운동가 동암(東菴) 장효근(張孝根)의 한시에 대한 고찰

국문 초록

동암(東菴) 장효근(張孝根, 1867~1946)은 1898년부터 자주·자강정신을 바탕으로 언론계에서 활동한 독립운동가이다. 한일합방 이후에는 주로 천도교 중앙총부 소속으로 종교 활동에 전력하면서 암암리에 3.1 만세운동을 준비하였고, 1919년 2월 27일 천도교 인쇄소 보성사(普成社)에서 독립선언서 2만여 매를 인쇄하여 배포하였으며, 이로 인해 일본 경찰에 체포되어 5개월간 영어(囹圄)의 노고를 겪기도 했었다. 그는 1916년부터 1945년까지 거의 하루도 빠뜨리지 않고 『장효근일기』를 집필하였는데, 그의 일기에는 당시대의 사회상과 국내외의 정세, 독립운동 활동 등이 기록되어 있다. 아울러 그가 남긴 928수의 한시 중에도 일제에 의해 몰락한 망국의 한(恨)을 노래하고 임진왜란 당시의 행주산성 전투를 추념하면서, 국제 정세를 관망하고 독립에 대한 의지를 보이는 작품들이 일부 존재한다. 본고에서는 그 중 일부 시들을 간추려서, 동암 장효근의 독립운동가적인 특색을 나타내는 한시에 대해 고찰하고자 한다.

영문 초록

Jang Hyo-geun (張孝根: 1867-1946), known by his nickname Dongam (東菴), was an independence activist who had been active in the media industry since 1898 based on the spirit of self-reliance and national strength. After the annexation of Korea by Japan, he devoted himself primarily to religious activities as a member of the Central Headquarters of Cheondogyo, while secretly preparing for the March 1st Independence Movement. On February 27, 1919, he printed and distributed around 20,000 copies of the Korean Declaration of Independence at the Boseongsa Printing Office affiliated with Cheondogyo. As a result, he was arrested by Japanese police and imprisoned for five months. From 1916 to 1945, Jang kept a daily journal, The Diary of Jang Hyo-geun, which offers valuable insights into the social conditions, domestic and international affairs, and independence activities of the period. Among the 928 poems he left behind, several express the sorrow (恨) of a lost nation under colonial rule, commemorate the Battle of Haengju during the Imjin War, observe international developments, and affirm his determination for national independence. This study examines a selection of these poems, focusing on how they reflect Dongam Jang Hyo-geun’s identity and spirit as an independence activist.
