Asymmetric Effects of Remittances on Economic Growth in the Philippines

국문 초록

거시경제 변수, 특히 경제 성장은 종종 비선형적 특성을 보인다는 점이 인정되고 있습니다. 그러나 필리핀의 송금과 경제 성장 간의 관계에 대한 기존 연구들은 대부분 선형 또는 대칭적 방법론을 사용함으로써 잠재적인 비대칭성을 간과해 왔습니다. 본 연구는 1981년부터 2023년까지의 연간 데이터를 활용하여, 송금과 경제 성장 간의 비선형적 관계를 규명하기 위해 비선형 자기회귀 분산 지연(NARDL) 모형을 적용하였습니다. 분석 결과, 송금이 1% 증가할 경우 경제 성장은 0.05% 상승하며(유의수준 5%), 반대로 송금이 1% 감소할 경우 경제 성장은 0.27% 하락하는 것으로 나타났습니다(유의수준 5%). 또한, Hatemi-J 비선형 인과성 검정 결과는 양(陽)의 송금 충격에 대해 단방향 인과관계를, 음(陰)의 충격에 대해서는 쌍방향 인과관계를 보여주며, 송금이 경제 성장에 미치는 비대칭적 영향을 강조합니다.

영문 초록

It is acknowledged that macroeconomic variables, including economic growth, often exhibit nonlinear behavior. However, previous research on the relationship between remittances and economic growth in the Philippines has largely employed linear or symmetric methodologies, thereby overlooking potential asymmetries. Using annual data from 1981 to 2023, this study employs the Nonlinear Autoregressive Distributed Lag (NARDL) model to uncover a nonlinear relationship between remittances and economic growth. The findings reveal that a 1% increase in remittances leads to a 0.05% rise in economic growth (significant at the 5% level), whereas a 1% decrease in remittances results in a 0.27% decline in economic growth (also significant at the 5% level). Additionally, the Hatemi-J nonlinear causality test confirms a unidirectional causal relationship for positive remittance shocks and a bidirectional relationship for negative shocks, emphasizing the asymmetric effects of remittances on economic growth in the Philippines.
