국문 초록

본 연구는 군 전역 후 복학한 남학생들이 또래 여성과의 상호작용을 어떻게 경험하는지, 그리고 그 경험 속에서 남성성을 어떻게 형성하고 재구성하는지를 탐구하고자 한 질적 사례연구이다. 연구자들은 2024년 1학기나 2학기에 복학한 남자 대학생 6명에 대한 심층면담을 수행하고 분석하였다. 연구 결과, 첫째, 복학생들은 또래 여성들과의 상호작용 속에서 관계를 다시 시작할 때의 어색함과 조심스러움, 군대 이야기에서 발견되는 미묘한 비대칭성, 그리고 연애를 둘러싼 기대와 감정 교류에 대한 인식을 드러냈다. 둘째, 이러한 상호작용 경험을 통해 복학생들은 비연애 관계에서는 헤게모니적 남성성과 거리를 두는 방식으로, 그리고 연애 관계에서는 헤게모니적 남성성을 개인적 관계 속에서 조정하고 변형하는 방식으로 하이브리드 남성성을 구성하고 있었다. 이러한 결과는 복학생들이 관계적 맥락에 따라 상이한 남성성을 구현하는 모습을 보여주며, 이는 남성성이 고정된 실체가 아니라 유동적으로 재구성됨을 의미한다. 나아가, 복학생들의 전통적 남성성에서 벗어나려는 시도가 새로운 남성성을 형성하는 결과로 이어질 수 있음을 밝혔다. 특히, 군 복무 중 형성된 남성성의 변화 가능성에 있어 또래 여성과의 상호작용이 중요한 단초가 될 수 있음을 시사한다.

영문 초록

This qualitative case study explores how male university students returning after military service experience interactions with female peers and how they construct and reconstruct their masculinity through these experiences. The researchers conducted and analyzed in-depth interviews with six male students who resumed their studies in either the first or second semester of 2024. The findings revealed the following: First, returning male students expressed awkwardness and caution when reestablishing relationships with female peers, noted subtle asymmetries embedded in conversations about military experiences, and shared their perceptions of expectations and emotional exchanges in romantic relationships. Second, through these interactions, the male students formed hybrid masculinity in two distinct ways―by distancing themselves from hegemonic masculinity in non-romantic relationships and by negotiating and modifying hegemonic masculinity within romantic relationships. These findings suggest that returning male students exhibit different forms of masculinity depending on the relational context, highlighting that masculinity is not a fixed entity but is fluidly reconstructed. Furthermore, the study suggests that attempts to move away from traditional masculinity may lead to the formation of new masculinities. In particular, interactions with female peers play a crucial role in shaping the potential transformation of masculinity developed during military service.d
