국문 초록

1990년대는 그간의 한국 사회를 지배하고 있던 근·현대화, 반공 이데올로기, 군사독재 등의 담론들이 소멸함과 동시에 자본주의가 좀 더 본격적으로 발현되기 시작하던 시기이다. 이러한 자본주의는 해외여행 자율화를 기점으로 다양한 여행 문화의 확산, 다양한 대중문화의 생산 및 양산과 대중매체의 발전으로보다 구체화되기 시작했고, 특히 개인용 컴퓨터 보급과 PC통신의 활성화, 다양한 IT 및 게임 산업을 통해 고도 기술사회로 진입하던 시기였다. 이 연구는 김영하와 윤대녕의 작품을 통해 1990년대 서울이라는 대도시, 그리고 서울을 구성하고 있는 여러 공간들 속에 내재되어 있는 90년대의 도시적욕망을 살펴보는 것에 초점을 두고 있다. 김영하와 윤대녕은 1990년대를 대표하는 작가이기도 하지만, 그들 작품에 등장하는 서울이라는 도시 속에 등장하는다양한 공간들, 그리고 그 공간들을 축으로 하는 등장인물들의 다양한 욕망들을1990년대의 형태로 그려냈다는 점에서 의미가 있다. 근대 경성을 탐험하던 당대 지식인들과는 다른 방향에서 서울의 탐색은 결국도시의 욕망과 연결되어 있다. 이 연구는 김영하의 초기작 『나는 나를 파괴할 권리가 있다』(1996)와 윤대녕의 두 단편 「은어낚시통신」(1994), 「남쪽 계단을 보라」 (1995)를 중심으로 1990년대 도시의 장소성과 욕망을 살펴보고자 한다.

영문 초록

The 1990s marked a transitional period in South Korea, during which dominant discourses such as modernization, anti-communist ideology, and military dictatorship began to fade, while capitalism started to emerge more fully. This capitalism became increasingly tangible following the liberalization of overseas travel, which led to the expansion of travel culture, the mass production of popular culture, and the development of mass media. In particular, the widespread adoption of personal computers, the rise of PC- based communication networks, and the growth of IT and gaming industries signaled Korea’s entry into a highly technological society. This study focuses on exploring the urban desires embedded in the city of Seoul during the 1990s, as depicted in the works of Kim Young-ha and Yoon Dae-nyung. Both writers are emblematic figures of the decade, and their literary portrayals of Seoul—through the diverse urban spaces and the characters whose desires revolve around these spaces—offer significant insights into the urban imagination of that time. Unlike the intellectuals of earlier generations who explored modern Gyeongseong (colonial Seoul), these writers engage with Seoul from a different angle, linking their explorations directly to the desires of the contemporary city. Focusing on Kim Young-ha’s early novel I Have the Right to Destroy Myself(1996) and Yoon Dae-nyung’s short stories “Silver Salmon Fishing Communication” (1994) and “Look at the Southern Stairs” (1995), this study examines the spatial characteristics and desires of the urban landscape in 1990s Seoul.
