과정 생명 사상의 기초가 되는 과정사상의 신개념 연구 - John B. Cobb Jr.의 신개념을 중심으로

국문 초록

본 연구는 존 캅의 신개념이 인간과 자연 사이의 유기체적 관계의 존재 근거가 되고 지속 가능한 미래 사회의 형이상학적 대안이 될 수 있음을 논증하는 데 있다. 이것은 전통적 신개념에 주로 나타나는 인간과 자연 사이의 지배-피지배의 분절된 세계관을 극복하고자 하는 하나의 시도이고, 동시에 무신론에 바탕을 둔 환경 운동가들의 실천에 견고한 형이상학적 기초를 제안하는 것이다. 캅의 학문적 자리는 전통적 유신론의 비합리성에 대한 비판과 무신론적 세속적 세계관의 거부 양자 사이에 정초한다. 캅에 따르면 자연의 모든 생성, 발전, 소멸의 과정이 신적 영향 아래에 있다. 우주 발생의 근원과 진행 과정에서 현실적 존재의 생성 과정을 일으키는 신의 존재가 필수적으로 상정되어야만 한다. 인간과 자연의 분절된 전통적 신 이해와는 달리, 과정 생명 사상은 세상의 모든 현실적 존재가 직간접적으로 서로에게 의존하고 있는 상호 연계된 시스템으로 이해한다. 인간은 연계된 시스템 안에서 필수적이고 중요한 역할을 감당할 때, 전체 생명 시스템과 미래 세대들, 그리고 신에게 책임적 존재가 된다. 현대 과학과 기술이 보여주고 있는 인간의 자연에 대한 파괴 위기를 신에 대한 호소 없이 적절하게 대응할 수 있는 궁극적 해답을 제공해 줄 수 없다. 인간과 자연의 공생을 담보하는 미래 사회의 궁극적이고 정합적인 희망의 기초는 캅이 조망하고 있는 과정 생명 사상의 신개념으로부터 올 수 있다.

영문 초록

The purpose of this study is to demonstrate that John B. Cobb’s Theism serves as the basis for the existence of organic relations between humans and nature and can be a metaphysical alternative to a sustainable future society. This paper attempts to overcome the fragmented worldview characterized by the dominant-dominated relationship between humans and nature, which appears mainly in the traditional understanding of God, and at the same time proposes a solid metaphysical foundation for the practice of atheism-based environmentalists. Cobb’s academic position is based on both criticism of the irrationality of traditional theism and the rejection of an atheistic secular worldview. Cobb’s theistic naturalism understands that all the process of becoming, developing, and perishing of nature are under divine influence. In the ground and process of the cosmic occurrence, Cobb argues that the existence of God, which causes the becoming process of actual entity, must be assumed. Unlike the traditional theism which perceives man and nature in a segmented way, process thought of life is understood as an interconnected system in which all the individual entities in the world are dependent on each other directly or indirectly. Human beings are part of nature and are interrelated with the rest of nature, and prosper only when our bodies are continuous with the whole living system. When humans play an important role in the whole, they become responsible to the entire life system, to our descendants, and to God. Without appealing to God, we cannot provide the ultimate answer to adequately respond to the crisis of human destruction of nature that modern science and technology are showing. The ultimate hope of a future society, which guarantees the symbiosis of humans and nature, can only come from Cobb’s process God of Life.
