국문 초록

이 논문의 목적은 아리스토텔레스의 『니코마코스 윤리학』에 제시된 성품의 미덕을 명료화한 다음, 이 명료화가 성품의 미덕을 공동체의 편에서 부르는 명칭인 관습적 도덕과 관련하여 제공하는 교육적 시사를 탐색하는 데에 있다. 이를 위하여 이 논문에서는 성품의 미덕의 목적, 정의, 실현 방법 등에 관하여 그가 제시한 주장에 들어 있는 수수께끼들을 그의 실체 이론에 비추어 해명하고자 한다. 목적과 관련된 보편-특수의 관계 문제, 정의와 관련된 성향-행위의 관계 문제, 실현 방법과 관련된 이성-비이성 또는 수단-목적의 관계 문제가 그 수수께끼들이고, 이것들은 그가 제시한 ‘실체 범주와 속성 범주들의 구분 및 관련’을 사고의 틀로 삼을 때 해명될 수 있다. 즉, 수수께끼상의 이분법적 구분들의 배후에는 제일 실체로서의 영혼이 있고, 각 구분의 양항은 이 영혼의 지성이 그 배후에서 고유한 활동을 전개하는, 성품의 미덕에 따른 개별 행위자의 구체적 행위 안에서 종합될 수 있다. 영혼의 지성적 활동은 그 자체로 좋은 것이자 다른 것에도 그 자체로 좋음을 베푸는 고귀한 것이다. 그리하여 영혼의 지성적 활동이 그 안에 실현된 성품의 미덕 또는 관습적 도덕은, 그것이 지식 전문가를 넘어서 훌륭한 사람을 길러내는 것을 목적으로 삼는 한, 반성적 도덕교육뿐만 아니라 모든 유형의 지식교육의 성패를 좌우하는 실제적 기반이자 원동력이다.

영문 초록

This study aimed to clarify “virtue of character”(ethike arete) in Aristotle’s Nicomachean Ethics and draw educational implications related to conventional morality, which is the name given to virtue of character on the part of the community. The study attempted to elucidate three riddles contained in some arguments presented by Aristotle regarding the purpose, definition, and realization method of virtue of character in the light of his substance theory. The problem of the universal-particular relationship in terms of purpose, the problem of disposition(hexis)-practical action(praxis) relationship in terms of definition, and the problem of the rational-irrational relationship or means-end relationship in terms of realization method are the riddles, and these can be elucidated when we use the “distinction and relationship between a substance and its properties,” which Aristotle presented as a framework for thinking. Thus, behind dichotomous distinctions in the riddles, there is a human agent’s soul(psyche) as a primary substance(ousia), and the two attributive sides of each distinction can be synthesized in the concrete virtuous action of the agent in which the intelligence(nous) of this soul unfolds its proper activity. This intellectual activity is the noble(to kalon) that is good in itself and gives its goodness to others. Thus, virtue of character or conventional morality in which the activity is realized is the practical foundation and driving force on and by which the success or failure of not only reflective moral education but also all kinds of knowledge education is determined, as long as they aim to lead people beyond knowledge experts to noble persons.
