근대 일본과 조선에서의 ‘education’과 ‘교육’의 만남

국문 초록

이 글은 서구에서 형성된 'education' 개념이 근대 동아시아의 시공간에서 번역어로서의 ‘교육’ 개념과 만나는 과정을 다루었다. 구체적으로 근대 이전 조선과 일본에서의 ‘교육’ 개념의 의미를 확인한 후, 근대에 접어들어 ‘education’ 개념이 언제 어떤 용어로 번역되었는지를 밝히기 위해 근대 시기 일본과 조선의 이중어 사전 내용의 변천 과정을 추적하였다. 근대 이전에 ‘교육’ 개념은 조선에서는 ‘인재양성’을 위한 군주의 통치 행위를 가리키는 말로 활용되는 등 오늘날과는 그 의미가 달랐으며, 일본에서는 그것이 사무라이의 학문적 수양 또는 서민의 도덕적 감화를 가리키는 신조어에 가까웠다. 근대에 접어들어 서구의 'education' 개념이 도입되면서 일본에서 1860년대 중반에 그 번역어로 ‘교육’ 개념이 등장하였으며 그 번역에 기반하여 1870년대 후반에 근대적 교육 개념이 형성되었다. 일본에서 형성된 ‘education’의 번역어로서의 근대적 ‘교육’ 개념은 조선으로 확산되어 갔다. 그 과정에서 전통적인 ‘교육’ 개념의 의미는 변용되거나 혹은 근대적인 의미와 병존하면서 오늘날에 이르게 되었다.

영문 초록

This study aims to shed light on the process through which the Western concept of “education” aligned with the concept of “kyo-yook“ (敎育) as a translation in modern Japan and Korea. After confirming the meaning of “kyo-yook” (敎育) in Korea and Japan before the modern era, I traced the changes in the contents of foreign-language dictionaries in Japan and Korea during the modern era to reveal when and with what terms the concept of “education” was translated. Before the modern era, the concept of “kyo-yook” (敎育) had a different meaning. In Korea, it was used to refer to the monarch’s ruling act for “nurturing talent,” and in Japan, it was closer to a new word that appeared in the late Edo period referring to the academic training of samurai or the moral influence of common people. As the Western concept of “education” was introduced into modern times, the concept of “kyo-yook” (敎育) as its translation appeared in Japan in the mid-1860s, and the modern concept of education was developed in the late 1870s based on that translation. The modern Japanese concept of “kyo-yook” (敎育) as a translation of “education” spread to Korea. In the process, the meaning of the traditional concept of “kyo-yook” (敎育)’ has been transformed or has coexisted with modern meanings to the present day.
