국문 초록

본 논문은 인류세 시대의 패러다임으로 자리 잡은 ‘포스트휴머니즘’의 인류학적 흐름인 ‘존재론적 인류학’과 ‘다종 민족지’를 비판적으로 성찰하고, 남동 알래스카 클링깃 원주민 사회의 사례를 통해 인간과 비인간 존재들이 공생하는 다종의 세계 만들기가 어떻게 구현되고 실천되는지를 고찰한다. ‘존재론적 인류학’과 ‘다종 민족지’는 인간 중심적인 사고를 넘어 비인간 존재로 시선을 확장하고 있지만, 이 흐름을 주도했던 연구들은 원주민 사회를 여전히 근대화되지 못한 ‘야생의 사고’ 속으로 몰아넣는 경향이 강하다. 따라서, 지구화 시대에 원주민 사회가 마주하고 있는 현실과 대안적인 실천들을 제대로 반영하지 못하고 있다. 하지만, 남동 알래스카의 클링깃 원주민 사회는 서구 모더니티와 부족주의가 공존하는 속에서 공생적인 다종의 세계관을 강화하고, 지속 가능한 지구를 만들고, 환경 정의를 실현하려는 실천에 나서고 있다. 결론적으로, 본 논문은 원주민 사회를 문명 너머의 세계로 타자화하려는 기획에 반대하고, 그들을 지구화 시대에 인간과 비인간 존재들이 공존하는 다종의 세계를 만들어 가고 있는 실천적인 주체임을 조명하고자 한다.

영문 초록

This paper critically examines ‘ontological anthropology’ and ‘multispecies ethnography’, which are anthropological trends of ‘posthumanism’ that have become the paradigm of the Anthropocene era, and examines how making a multispecies world where humans and nonhumans coexist is realized and practiced in Tlingit indigenous society of Southeast Alaska. ‘Ontological anthropology’ and ‘multispecies ethnography’ are expanding beyond human-centered thinking to nonhuman beings, but they still have a strong tendency to force indigenous societies into a ‘savage mind’, which has not yet been modernized. Thus, they do not properly represent the reality and alternative life that indigenous society is facing and making in the era of globalization. However, Tlingit indigenous society in Southeast Alaska is strengthening a symbiotic multispecies worldview in the midst of Western modernity and tribalism, and is working on making a sustainable Earth and achieving environmental justice. Therefore, this paper opposes the project of relegating indigenous societies to a world beyond civilization, and instead sheds light on them as practical agents who are making a multispecies world where humans and nonhuman beings coexist in the age of globalization.
