국문 초록

이 글은 코로나19 팬데믹을 계기로 드러난 죽음에 대한 인식의 변화를 분석하고, 이를 극복하기 위한 새로운 생사학의 이론적 기반을 모색하는 시도이다. 현대인은 죽음을 금기시하고, 병원 중심의 임종과 의료 기술의 발전으로 인해 죽음을 삶의 일부로 받아들이지 못하게 되었다. 여기에 기후 위기, 생태계 파괴, 가상현실과 AI 등 기술의 발전은 인간과 죽음, 관계에 대한 사유를 더욱 복잡하게 만들고 있다. 이러한 상황을 개선하기 위해서는 기존의 근대적 죽음관을 넘어선 관계론적 존재론이 필요하다. 개체는 독립된 존재가 아니라 환경과 관계 속에서 형성되고 해체되는 존재이며, 죽음은 존재가 전체로 되돌아가는 과정으로 이해되어야 한다. 이를 이론적으로 뒷받침하기 위해 질베르 시몽동의 개체화 이론, 브뤼노 라투르의 행위자-연결망 이론, 도나 해러웨이의 트러블과 실뜨기 개념 등을 검토해 본다. 인간은 생태계와 긴밀히 연결된 존재이므로, 죽음을 회피하거나 기술로 극복하려고 시도하기보다는 삶과 죽음을 공동체적이고 생태적인 관점에서 새롭게 사유해야 한다. 객관성과 주관성의 균형 속에서 죽음에 대한 성숙한 태도를 찾아야 한다.

영문 초록

This article analyzes the change of perception of death in modern society, which became evident during the COVID-19 pandemic, and seeks a theoretical foundation for a new study of life and death to overcome these issues. Modern individuals tend to treat death as a taboo, and due to hospital-centered end-of-life care and advances in medical technology, they have become unable to accept death as a natural part of life. Furthermore, developments in technology - such as the climate crisis, ecological destruction, virtual reality, and artificial intelligence - make it increasingly complicated to reflect on death, human existence, and relationships. To improve this situation, a relational ontology that transcends the modern view of death is necessary. Beings are not independent entities but are formed and dissolved within a web of relationships and environments. Death should be understood as a process in which existence returns to the whole. To provide a theoretical foundation for this perspective, the article examines Gilbert Simondon’s theory of individuation, Bruno Latour’s actor-network theory, and Donna Haraway’s concepts of string figures and staying with the trouble. Since human beings are deeply interconnected with the ecosystem, we should not attempt to evade or overcome death through technology. Instead, we must reconceptualize life and death from a communal and ecological standpoint. A mature attitude toward death must be cultivated through a balanced perspective that incorporates both objectivity and subjectivity.
