국문 초록

이 논문은 대마도가 임진왜란 전후로 조선과 일본 사이에서 수행한 외교적인 역할에 대하여 분석한 것이다. 대마도는 조선과 일본을 잇는 외교와 무역의 중재자로서, 임진왜란 전후로 역할이 변했다. 임진왜란 전에는 독자적 외교 공간을 가지던 대마도는 왜란기 동안 일본 중앙정부의 대리기관으로 전환되었다. 전쟁 동안 대마도는 군사 동원 및 조선 침략 지원에 참여했지만, 경제 기반과 사회 구조가 심각히 파괴되었다. 이후 대마도는 조선과의 외교 관계 회복을 위해 노력하며 무역 및 외교 중재 역할을 강화했다. 1609년 기유조약을 통해 조선과 일본은 정식 관계를 회복했고, 대마도는 조선과 일본 사이에서 무역 독점권을 확보하며 근세 외교의 중심이 되었다.

영문 초록

This study examines the diplomatic functions of Tsushima Island in Joseon-Japan relations before and after the Imjin War. Tsushima initially operated as an autonomous diplomatic and commercial intermediary, but its role underwent a significant transformation during and after the war. Prior to the conflict, Tsushima exercised considerable autonomy in conducting diplomatic affairs with Joseon. However, during the Imjin War, the island became actively involved in Japan’s military campaigns, contributing to the invasion of Joseon and consequently suffering substantial damage to its economic base and social order. In the aftermath of the war, Tsushima took the initiative in restoring diplomatic relations with Joseon and increasingly positioned itself as a central mediator in bilateral trade and diplomacy. The conclusion of the Giyu Treaty in 1609 formally reestablished diplomatic ties between Joseon and Japan, granting Tsushima exclusive rights to manage trade with Joseon and affirming its pivotal role in early modern East Asian diplomacy.
