국문 초록

본 연구는 1990년부터 2022년까지의 데이터를 활용하여 동남아시아 국가들에서 외국인직접투자(FDI)와 생태 발자국 간의 관계를 패널 분위수 회귀분석(panel quantile regression)을 통해 분석하였다. 분석 결과, FDI는 생태 발자국 수준에 따라 서로 다른 영향을 미치는 것으로 나타났다. 구체적으로, 생태 발자국 수준이 낮은 국가(예: 필리핀, 인도네시아)에서는 FDI가 생태 발자국을 소폭 증가시키는 경향을 보였으나, 이는 통계적으로 유의하지 않았다. 반면, 생태 발자국 수준이 높은 국가(예: 말레이시아, 싱가포르)에서는 FDI가 생태 발자국을 감소시키는 데 기여하였다. 한편, 생태 발자국 수준이 중간인 국가(예: 태국)에서는 전환적인 패턴이 관찰되었다. 본 연구는 다음과 같은 세 가지 정책적 시사점을 제시한다. 첫째, 생태 발자국 수준이 낮은 국가는 환경 규제를 강화하여 FDI가 환경에 미치는 부정적 영향을 최소화해야 한다. 둘째, 생태 발자국 수준이 높은 국가는 이미 확립된 엄격한 환경 기준을 지속적으로 유지하고 더욱 강화해야 한다. 마지막으로, 생태 발자국 수준이 중간인 국가는 녹색 투자와 기술 이전을 적극 장려함으로써 지속 가능한 발전을 촉진해야 한다.

영문 초록

This study examines the relationship between foreign direct investment (FDI) and ecological footprints in Southeast Asian countries, utilizing panel quantile regression with data spanning 1990 to 2022. The findings indicate that FDI has varying effects depending on the level of ecological footprint. In countries with lower ecological footprints, such as the Philippines and Indonesia, FDI slightly increases the ecological footprint, though the effect is not statistically significant. Conversely, in countries with higher ecological footprints, such as Malaysia and Singapore, FDI contributes to a reduction in ecological footprints. Thailand, situated in the mid-range of ecological pressure, demonstrates a transitional pattern. The study offers three key policy recommendations. First, countries with lower ecological footprints should strengthen environmental regulations. Second, nations with higher ecological footprints must uphold stringent environmental standards. Lastly, mid-range economies should encourage green investment and technology transfer.
