디킨슨과 예이츠의 시에서 드러나는 죽음의 타자성

국문 초록

디킨슨과 예이츠는 각각 다른 방식으로 죽음에 대한 그들의 고민과 사색을 시에 담고 있다. 디킨슨은 죽음을 낯선 존재의 갑작스러운 마주침처럼 묘사하며 그 순간을 관찰한다. 예이츠는 죽음을 두려워하기도 하지만 초월적인 인간을 제시하거나 영혼의 불멸과 환생을 죽음과 관련짓기도 한다. 두 시인은 죽음을 사색하며 삶에 미치는 영행을 모색한다. 죽음에 대한 두 시인의 고민은 레비나스의 죽음의 타자성과 연결할 수 있다. 죽음은 자아가 경험한 적 없는 영역으로 이동하고 변화하는 순간으로서 죽음에 대하여 자아가 그 어떤 영향력도 가지지 못하는 수동성으로의 전환이다. 디킨슨과 예이츠는 죽음과 마주한 인간의 무력함과 신비함을 시에서 표현한다. 두 시인은 간접적으로 사유할 수밖에 없는 죽음의 한계를 비유와 상징으로 표현하면서 죽음의 절대적 타자성을 시에 담는다.

영문 초록

Dickinson and Yeats contemplate death deeply and broaden their perception of death. Dickinson describes the moment of death as a sudden encounter of a strange being and leaves death in an obscure state. In his poetry dealing with death, Yeats mourns the dead or fears death. Sometimes he shows that a transcendent human being overcomes death. The two poets’ thoughts on death are related to the concept of death alterity that Levinas argued. Dickinson and Yeats recognize that death is beyond our influence, and express human helplessness in face of mysterious death, using various figurative methods and symbols in their poems.
