국문 초록

비잔티움 시에는 이십세기 초 서구의 문제점을 해결하려는 모던시인들의 시도에 동참하려는 예이츠의 노력이 반영되어 있다.. 예이츠는 엘리옷 파운드와 마찬가지로 동양에서 그 해법을 찾으려 했다. 비잔티움 시는 서구의 독자들에게 새로운 영적 전통을 제공하려는 예이츠의 시도이며 비잔티움은 서구의 종교적인 전통과 동양의 영적인 생각이 어우러진 유토피아를 나타낸다. 이 두 편의 시에서 예이츠는 크리스천 내러티브 전통을 바탕으로 불교개념의 고통과 환생 그리고 인간 고통에 대한 동양철학의 통찰을 조합하여 새로운 상징을 창조한다. 이 작업은 존재의 통합을 실현하려는 평생에 걸친 시인의 노력의 일부로 보아야 할 것이다. 지리적으로도 동양과 서양에 위치한 비잔티움은 동양과 서양을 아우르는 새로운 예이츠식 종교의 상징이다.

영문 초록

Two Byzantium poems reflect Yeats’s efforts to participate in the modernist concern with the cures of the problem of Western decline in the early twentieth century. Yeats, like Eliot and Pound, turned to the East for a solution. The two Byzantium poems were composed as part of Yeats’s attempts to offer a new spiritual tradition for western readers. Byzantium stands for the utopia fusing Western religious ideas and Eastern spiritual concepts. Here, Yeats weaves the Buddhist concepts of suffering and reincarnation and Eastern philosopher’s perception of human problems on the canvass of the Christian narrative tradition. This work can be thought of as the poet’s life-long struggle to embody the idea of Unity of Being. Located geographically in between the West and the East, Byzantium is an emblem of a new kind of Yeatsian religion, embracing both the West and the East.
