한국 탈놀이의 민속학, 미술사학과 미학의 실증적 접점에 대한 동서양 학제간 고찰

국문 초록

본고에서 필자는 우리나라 탈놀이 문화라는 특수한 경우에 대한 실증적 기술로부터 그것의 미학적 연구를 정초하고자 한다. 이 미학적 연구는 탈놀이 문화를 연구하는 민속학과 미술사학과 하나의 방법적 서설을 공유하고, 이 공유는 탈놀이에 대한 실제 미적 체험을 미적인 것으로 만드는, 모든 인류에게 동등한 자격으로서 주어진 신경생물학적 양태에 대한 명확한 해명으로부터 시작되어야만 가능하다. 우리가 ‘미적’이라 부를 수 있는 것은 감정과 주의력, 만족이라는 심신의 자원들을 활용하는 ‘정동’과 그에 대한 내감적 해석이다. 기의 유행을 따르는 탈놀이 체험에서 이 양태가 발현될 때 정동은 사물세계와의 감통을 통해 신경생리적 평형상태와 긴장감을 일으키고, 이 긴장감에 대한 만족적 해소가 탈놀이를 놀이판으로 만드는 기연이 되는 것이다. 탈놀이의 운명은 이웃이라는 대중이 결정하며, 이들의 체험전반이 감정과 주의력에 의거하는 자신의 인지 활동에 의거하므로, 탈놀이를 전승시키는 가장 중요한 요인은 감정과 결부되는 만족 또는 그것의 강도에 있다고 할 수 있다. 탈을 만드는 작가와 탈놀이를 수행하는 작가의 목적은 모두 탈예술가와 관객의 관계가 정서적 반응을 공유하는 데에 있으며, 이 공유가 곧 탈예술가들의 주요 의도를 구성한다는 데에서 의견의 일치를 본다. 따라서 본고는 특수하게 미적인 체험, 특히 탈문화에서의 미적 체험에 대한 동서양 학제간 고찰을 시도해볼 것이다.

영문 초록

In this paper I will lay the groundwork for general aesthetic considerations, departing from the specific case of the culture of traditional Korean mask dance (tallori, 탈놀이). These considerations require an empirical inquiry into the neurobiological modality that makes one’s bodily experience aesthetic and can thereby be qualified as a prolegomenon for ethnological and art-historical researches. It will first be argued that what we call “aesthetic” designates the modality of ‘affect’ and its introspective interpretation that mobilize bodily and mental resources of emotion, attention and satisfaction. If activated in the real-time experience of tallori, following the movement of Ki, the aesthetic modality gives rise to a synaesthesia with the world, creating a tension vis-à-vis neurophysiological equilibrium. The satisfactory resolution of this tension in turn gives rise to an occasion of collective amusement in high spirit. The success and fortune of tallori depend predominantly on the sentimental reception of the neighbors whose aesthetic experience is always predicated upon their emotions and attentive cognition. The most prominent factor for its transmission, as I will argue, is the fact or the level of satisfaction: the artists responsible for the making and theatrical use of the masks claim in unison that the purpose of their artistis activities is to share the sentimental reactions with the live audience. This paper will then proceed to provide a basis for an aesthetics of tallori via interdisciplinary, cross-cultural research on the mechanisms of aesthetic experience.
