신라의 북진과정과 패강진의 설치에 관해서 다양한 연구가 제시되어 있다. 하지만 14군현의 설치시기, 패강진의 위치, 장구진과의 관계 등 명확히 규명되지 않은 부분도 여전히 남아 있다. 이러한 신라의북진과정에서 826년에 축성된 ‘패강장성(浿江長城)’의 위치 또한 마찬가지이다. 신라의 서북 변경 진출은 크게 내륙로와 연안로 두 곳으로 진행되었다. 평산에서 서흥과 신계로 이어지는 주요 교통로가분기하는데, 서쪽으로 서흥-봉산-재령으로 이어지고 북쪽으로 신계-수안-곡산으로 이어진다. 또 다른 교통로는 배천-연안-해주로 이어지는 연안 교통로이다. 신라는 내륙로 개척의 결과로 패강장성을쌓아 내륙 방어선을 구축하였고, 연안로 개척의 결과로 장구진을 해상 거점으로 삼았다. 패강장성이축조되던 9세기 지형과 교통로는 현재와 다른 모습이었다. 패강장성이 시작되는 극성 일대는 서쪽으로 제량해라는 내해와 접해 있었고, 당시 주요 교통로는 자비령과 수안 일대였다. 패강장성은 서쪽으로제량해에서 대동강 하구까지 수로로 연결되었고, 동쪽으로 극성에서 수안·곡산까지 산맥을 따라 연결되어 있었다.

영문 초록

Various studies have been presented on the process of Silla's northward advance and the installation of the Paegang-jin(浿江鎭). However, there are still parts that have not been clearly identified, such as the timing of the installation of 14 county and county prefectures, the location of the Paegang-jin, and the relationship of the Janggu-jin(長口鎭). The same is true of the location of the Paegang-Jangseong(浿江長城), which was constructed in 826 during the process of Silla's northward advance. Silla's advance into the northwest border was largely carried out in two places: inland and coastal. Silla built an inland defense line by building the Paegang-Jangseong as a result of the development of inland transportation routes, and made the Janggu-jin a maritime base as a result of the development of coastal transportation routes. The topography and transportation routes of the 9th century when the Paegang-Jangseong was constructed looked different from today. The Geukseong(棘城) area that started the Paegang-Jangseong was bordered by the inland sea the Jeliang-hae(濟梁海) to the west. At that time, the main transportation routes were the Jabi-ryeong (慈悲嶺) and Suan(遂安) area. The Paegang-Jangseong was connected by waterway from the Jeliang-hae to the mouth of the Daedong River(大同江) to the west, and from The Geukseong to the Goksan(谷山) to the east along the mountain range.
