타자의 반-테러리즘적 전매개화를 넘어서

국문 초록

‘전매개화’개념을 제안함으로써 리차드 그러신은 어떻게 최근의 전지구적 미디어가 미래에 있을 외상적 사건들을 이미 상상되고 예견된 것으로 선취하는 경향이 있는지를 적절하게 이론화했다. 그가 설득력 있게 주장하듯이 전매개화 논리의 목적은 전지구적 통치성의 권력이 미디어를 통해 테러와의 전쟁을 계속 수행하고 궁극적으로 인종적, 종족적 소수자들을 잠재적 테러리스트로서 분류하고관리할 수 있도록 하는 데 있다. 하지만 주체가 외상적 경험에 대처하는 방식에대한 그의 소박한 이해 때문에 전매개화에 대한 그의 이론화는 충분히 엄격하거나 정교하지 않은 채로 이루어졌고 이는 결국 전매개화의 논리에 대한 저항이나도전이 어떻게 가능한가에 대한 마찬가지로 모호한 이론을 산출하게 되었다. 이논문은 후기 라캉이 논의한 ‘실재와의 조우의 반복’ 개념과 ‘대상 a로서의 응시와의 빗나간 조우’라는 개념을 이런 맥락에 위치시키고, 특히 주관적 쇼트와 귀속불가능한 쇼트에 대한 조운 콥젝의 비교를 참조하여 전매개화 논리와 그 논리에도전하는 대항-매개화의 개념을 영화의 시각성과 관련하여 재이론화한다. 또한이 논문은 거스 반 산트의 2003년 영화 <엘러펀트>와 미하엘 하네케의 2005년영화 <히든>을 이러한 이론적 맥락에서 면밀히 검토함으로써 이 두 영화가 어떻게 여러 미학적인 기법들을 동원하여 미래의 외상적 현장들이 ‘비규정적 타자의응시’를 통해서 보여지는 것처럼 매개하는지를 보여줄 것이다. 이러한 검토를 통해 나는 이 영화들이 사회문화적 소수자들을 잠재적 테러리스트로 전매개하는경향에 대해 관객-주체가 수치심을 느낄 수 있게 하고 그리하여 관객-주체가 이들 타자들과의 정서적 관계를 새롭게 상상할 수 있게 한다고 주장한다.

영문 초록

By proposing the concept “premediation,” Richard Grusin has pertinently theorized how recent global media have an increasing tendency to pre-empt future traumatic events as already imagined and anticipated. He convincingly argues that the logic of premediation allows the global governmental power to continue waging a war with the terror through media coverage and ultimately to classify and manage racial and ethnic minorities as potential terrorists. But due to his naive idea of the ways the subject copes with the traumatic experience, his theorization of premediation remains insufficiently rigorous and delicate, and this has resulted in his equally vague idea of how to resist or challenge the logic of premediation. By situating the late Lacan’s concepts of the repetition of the encounter with the Real and the missed encounter with the gaze in this context and particularly referring to Joan Copjec’s distinction between the subjective and the unattributable shot, this paper retheorizes, in relation to cinematic visuality, both the logic of premediation and the notion of the counter-mediation that challenges this medial logic. Also, by closely reading two films, Elephant (Gus Van Sant, 2003) and Cache (Hidden, Michael Haneke, 2005) in this theoretical context, this paper shows how these two films deploy various aesthetic techniques to mediate future traumatic scenes as if they are being seen through an indeterminate Other’s gaze. From these readings, I contend that these films allow the spectator-subject to feel ashamed for his or her tendency to premediate culturally minorities as potential terrorists, and thus to imagine his or her affective relationship with these others in new ways.
