교육기관과 영화제를 중심으로 살펴본 한국 여성신인감독의 영화계 진출 현황

국문 초록

지난 해 미투운동(Me too)이 촉발한 문화산업에서의 여성주의 관점의 필요성과 최근 몇 년간 영화산업에서의 여성감독과 여성중심 서사의 성비 불균형에 대한 스웨덴, 미국, 호주, 영국 등의 다양한 연구가 발표되고 정책으로 이어지는 흐름 안에서 영화진흥위원회는 2017년 결산보고서에서 처음으로 성인지 통계를 발표하였다. 여성 영화인이 겪는 성불평등의 이유는 여러 가지 사회적 제약부터 남성 중심적인 영화산업의 한계와 여성에 대한 편견까지 그 뿌리가 깊고 다양하다. 그 결과 영화 안에서 여성에 대한 편견이 확산되고 입체적인 여성캐릭터를 찾아보기 어려워졌다. 뿐만 아니라 여성 감독 및 배우의 경력이 단절되는 등 영화산업의 발전을 저해하는 많은 문제가 제기되고 있다. 이는 비단 한국만의 문제가아니라 헐리우드와 영국, 호주, 프랑스 등 전 세계가 모두 맞닥뜨린 문제이기도하다. 이것을 해결하기 위해 세계 각국은 성인지적 관점에서의 영화산업에 관한통계 및 모니터링(monitoring)을 실시하고 있으며 이를 통해 영화산업의 성불평등 시스템 개선과 정책 개발을 해나가고 있다. 그 좋은 예는 스웨덴 영화협회가실천하고 있는 공적기금 지원을 받는 영화의 50대 50 남녀 동수제의 실현이라고할 수 있다. 한국 역시 한 해 여성감독이 만든 상업영화는 적게는 3편 많은 해에도 8편 정도에 불과하며 여성캐릭터의 빈곤한 현실이의 경력정체로 이어지는 등많은 어려움을 겪고 있다. 본 연구는 여성 신인감독의 현황을 살펴보기 위해 대학원과 국가 지원의 영화교육기관 포함 3개 기관(학교)와 전주국제영화제, 부산국제영화제의 신인감독을 중심으로 성인지적 관점에서의 통계와 분석을 실시하였다. 그 결과 여성 신인감독이 산업의 중심부로 갈수록 가파르게 사라지는 모습을 포착할 수 있었다. 한국영화가 성불평등을 해소하고 보다 다양하고 건강하게발전하기 위해서는 산업 내부는 물론 영화교육과 영화제 등 신인감독을 육성하고 발굴하는 단계에서부터 성인지적 통계와 모니터링이 필요한 것이다.

영문 초록

The need for feminist perspectives in the cultural industry triggered by Me too in the past year, and the need for a diverse range of Swedish, American, Australian, and British In the flow of research and policy, the Korea Film Commission released the first gender statistics in the 2017 report for Korean film. There are various ingrained reasons of gender inequality against a female movie person: from numerous social restrictions to male-oriented film industry and prejudice against female. As a result, stories about women disappear, reenactment of female characters under prejudice occurs, stereoscopic women characters disappear, and female directors and actresses may not continue their careers, causing various problems to hinder the development of film industry. This is a problem just in Korea but also in Hollywood, the U.K., Australia, France, and other countries over the world. To resolve this issue, numerous countries over the world are having statistics and monitoring of the film industry with the gender-sensitive perspective, and they are improving the gender inequality system and developing policies for the film industry. The great example of the above is the quantitative equality system of gender to have 50:50 ratio of men and women in films sponsored by public funds, implemented by the Swedish Film Institute. Female film directors in Korea are also facing many difficulties, and the ratio of female film directors in commercial films is at most 10% every year. This leads to the absence of a role model of film director for those who dream of a female film director, and this also acts as a hindrance to make women to hesitate their entrance into the film industry. In this study, to evaluate the status of new female film directors, the statistics and analysis of gender-sensitive perspective centered on new directors have been performed based on the data from three institutions (schools) including graduate schools and government-supported film educational institutions and two film festivals – Jeonju International Film Festival and Busan International Film Festival. As a result, there was a feature revealing that the number of female film directors rapidly and gradedly decreases as getting into the center of the industry. Moreover, to resolve this gender inequality and to have more various and healthy development of the film industry in Korea, the gender-sensitive statistics and monitoring shall be implemented not only within the industry but also from the steps of finding and raising new directors from film education and film festivals.
