국문 초록

본 논문의 목적은 <킬링 디어>에서 제기될 수 있는 두 가지 의문에 대해 정신분석적 관점으로 접근하기 위한 것이다. 하나는 마틴이 스티븐에게 복수하겠다며 하는 말의 내용인데, 그 말이 이해가 되지 않는다. 마틴은 스티븐의 가족 중 한명이 죽어야 나머지 가족구성원이 살 수 있고, 가족 중 누굴 죽일지는 스티븐이 결정해야 하고, 가족 모두가 죽어도 죄를 저지른 스티븐은 죽지 않으며, 자신이 말한 대로 하지 않으면 가족에게서 어떤 일이 일어날 것인지 구체적으로 나열한다. 그런데 영화에서는 마틴의 경고가 현실이 되어 나타난다. 다른 하나는 스티븐의가족 모두가 갖게 되는 죄의식이다. 스티븐의 가족은 스티븐이 수술하다가 마틴의 아버지를 죽였다는 사실을 모르는데도 마치 자기가 마틴의 아버지를 죽인 것처럼 마틴에게 꼼짝을 못한다. 스티븐만이 가져야 할 죄의식이 전염병처럼 가족전체로 퍼져나가 가족 모두가 죄의식에 전염된다. <킬링 디어>의 핵심 주제는 아버지 살해, 희생양-제물, 죄의식-전염의 세 가지다. 그것과 연관된 모티프는 에우리피데스의 비극 『아울리스의 이피게네이아』, 소포클레스의 비극 『오이디푸스 왕』, 프로이트의 오이디푸스적 원죄 이론, 기독교 성경에 나타나는 희생양과 죄의 사함, 프로이트의 원초적 아버지에 대한 유목민 신화, 그리고 셰익스피어의 『햄릿』에서 찾을 수 있다. 이 중에서 프로이트의 『토템과 타부』에 나오는 ‘원초적 아버지에 대한 유목민 신화’에서 아버지살해에 대한 무의식적 욕망으로 인해 발생하는 원죄가 죄의식의 근원을 이루고있다. 스티븐의 죄의식은 두 가지 차원으로 퍼져 나가는데 하나는 의식의 차원에서동료의사인 매튜와 마틴에게로 향하고, 다른 하나는 무의식의 차원에서 마틴을통해 스티븐의 가족에게로 전염된다. 영화는 무의식적 차원에서 전염되는 죄의식에 초점을 맞추고 있다. 영화에서는 정신분석적 동일시를 통해 등장인물이 앉는 자리를 해석할 수있다. 시계를 통해 마틴은 매튜와 동일시되어 ‘알고 있는 자’의 자리에 앉게 되고, 초경과 침대 위에 눕는 자세를 매개로 마틴과 킴의 관계는 스티븐과 안나의관계와 같게 된다. 스티븐의 아들인 밥은 겨드랑이 털을 매개로 마틴을 스티븐과 같은 자리에 앉히고, 마틴은 겨드랑이 털을 매개로 스티븐을 아버지의 자리에 앉힌다.

영문 초록

The purpose of this paper is to provide psychoanalytical answers to two key questions that are difficult to understand in the Killing of a Sacred Deer. The first are Martin’s words of revenge against Steven, which is not easily understood. What Martin says is as follows: One of the family members has to die if the rest of them want to survive. Steven should decide who is to be sacrificed. Steven who committed a crime will never die even if all his family members die. In addition, Martin specifically lists what will happen to Steven’s family if Steven doesn’t do exactly as he was told. Finally Martin’s warning comes true in the film. The second is sense of guilt that Steven’s family members are seized with. They don’t know the fact that Steven killed Martin’s father during surgery. Nevertheless, they are intimidated by Martin as if they killed Martin’s father. The sense of guilt which belongs to Steven prevails contagiously among the rest of his family. There are three main themes in the Killing of Sacred Deer: the murder of one’s father, scapegoat-sacrificial offering, sense of guilt-contagion. The motives associated with can be found in the followings: The tragedy 『Iphigenia in Aulis』 written by Euripides, the tragedy 『Oedipus Rex』 written by Sophocles, Freud’s Oedipus original sin theory and nomadic myth of primal father in 『Totem and Taboo』, scapegoats and forgiveness of sins in the Christian Bible, and 『Hamlet』 by Shakespeare. Among these, the root of guilt is the original sin caused by unconscious desire to kill his father in the nomadic myth of primal father’. Steven’s guilt prevails on two levels. On the conscious level, it spreads to his colleague Mattew and Martin. On the unconscious level, it spreads to Steven’s family through Martin. In the film, the position characters occupy can be interpreted through identification, a psychoanalytical concept. Through the wristwatch Martin is identified with Mattew and is placed in the position of the “knower.” The relationship between Martin and Kim comes to be the same as that between Steven and Anna by the medium of menarche and a reclining posture. Bob who is Steven’s son puts Martin in the same position as Steven by means of his armpit hair, and Martin puts Stephen in his father’s seat by the medium of his armpit hair.
