국문 초록

이 논문은 유로화가 도입된 이후에 국제금융시장에서 어떠한 역할을 수행했는지에 대하여 조사한다. 이를 위해 우리는 각국 중앙은행들의 외환보유고 구성에 유로화가 어떠한 영향을 끼쳤으며, 그 교환 환율이 시장근본 변수들의 가치를 충분히 반영하는지를 조사한다. 먼저 우리는 국제결제수단의 의미, 시장에서 유로화 위상의 변화 추이와 주요국 통화와의 환율 변화 추이를 분석한다. 다음으로, 국제금융시장에서 미국 달러와 일본 엔화 대비 유로화 환율에 대한 통계적 버블의 존재유무를 추정한다. 우리는 환율의 관측되지 않은 거품요소를 추정하기 위하여 Kalman 필터 기법을 적용한다. 추정결과는 모형의 오차항에 자기회귀 조건부 이분산성을 가정할 경우 유로화가 미국 달러와 일본 엔화 대비 최근에 유럽경제의 본원적 시장 가치를 상회하여 상당히 고 평가 되었음을 보여주는 분석결과를 가져왔다.

영문 초록

This study examines the Euro’s international role in the international financial market since its introduction. For that aim, we investigate its effect on the composition of central banks’ foreign exchange reserves and its market value based on economic fundamental variables. First, we briefly review the status of the Euro as an international reserve in some key aspects such as the share of the central banks and the trend of exchange rate against major currencies. Second, we test whether the current value of the Euro against the major currencies, such as the US dollar and the Japanese Yen, in international markets reflect the true value of fundamental economic variables or not. We obtain evidence supporting the viewpoint that the Euro has been significantly overvalued above its fundamental values in recent years.
