국문 초록

본 연구는 중국에 진출하는 한국기업들이 부담해야 하는 외국비용을 극복하면서 경쟁력을 강화시키는 전략적 수단으로서의 순차적 직접투자의 효과를 규명하고자 했다. 본 연구는 크게게임이론 모형과 실증분석 파트로 구별된다. 먼저 게임이론 모형은 순차적 직접투자를 사용하는 기업이 가질 수 있는 전략적 우위를 수리적으로 증명하는데, 이를 위해 시간 순서에 따라생산량을 결정시키고 생산효과의 유불리를 축으로 순차적 직접투자의 전략적 함의를 도출한다. 본 연구의 이론모형은 크게 네 가지 시사점을 제시하는데, 첫째, 설령 후속 투자가 지속될지라도 후속투자에 비해 초기 투자가 순차적 투자에 비해 보다 큰 생산효과를 가지고, 둘째, 후속투자의 생산효과는 증가하기는 하나 점차 감소하게 되므로 중국 시장에 오래 머물 경우후속투자를 지속시킬 필요가 있으며, 셋째, 순차적 직접투자를 통해 한국기업들은 장기적으로시장을 리드할 수 있는 경쟁력을 갖출 수 있다. 실증분석 결과 순차적 직접투자를 단행함에 있어 그린필드 투자와 합작투자 중 전자로 설립된 자회사들이 우리나라 모기업들의 성과에 보다유의적인 수준에서 높은 기여도를 보이고 있는 것으로 나타났다. 이는 1992년 양국 수교 이후2000년대 초반가지도 중소기업들이 순차적 직접투자를 보다 빈번히 단행했기 때문이다.

영문 초록

This paper explores the time sequence of Korean firms’ Chinese sequential investments and its contribution to Korean firms’ performance. In the game theoretic model, four findings are presented. First, initial investment compared to follow-up investments has a larger impact to the performance of sequential investors. Second, the contribution of follow-up investments decreases marginally, which suggests that it is necessary to make follow-up investments more frequently if they plan to stay longer in China. Third, Korean sequential investors can leapfrog local competitors in the long-run through successive follow-up investments. Empirical results show that, between green field investment and joint venture, those sequential investments established by the former contribute more to Korean parents’ performance. This result originates from the fact that a few Korean small- and medium-size corporations have established subsidiaries through sequential investment strategy; in fact, they pursued frequent sequential investments ex post 1992 mutual diplomatic ties till 2000s.
