An Analysis of Factors Affecting the Freight Rates of Global Dry Bulk Shipping Market

국문 초록

본 연구는 벡터오차수정 모형(Vector Error Correction Model; VECM)을 사용하여 건화물선 운임에 영향을 미치는 요인 분석을 수행하였다. 이를 위해 영국 해상무역 컨설턴트인 클락슨의 데이터를 사용했으며, 분석결과 물동량 1.0% 증가 시 운임 6.0% 증가, 선복량 1.0% 증가 시 운임 4.5% 감소, 벙커유 가격 1.0% 증가 시 운임 0.13% 증가, Libor 1.0% 증가 시 운임은 0.14% 증가하는 것으로 각각 분석되었다. 또한 현 운임이 장기균형 시점의 운임보다 1.0% 클 경우 운임은 차기에 1.54% 감소하며, 장기균형 시점의 운임보다 1.0% 작을 경우 차기에 1.55% 증가하는 것으로 각각 나타났다. 동 연구는 장기균형으로의 수렴 속도를 추정하여 건화물 시장 내 존재하는 시장 메커니즘을 확인하였다는데 의의가 있다. 이러한 추정 결과는 건화물 시장에서 시장의 가격조절 기능이 작동함을 보여주고 있다. 본 연구는 건화물선 운임에 미치는 주요 요인별 영향력을 분석하였는데 후속 연구에서 건화물 시장 이외 다양한 선종을 대상으로 연구를 수행한다면 연구결과의 비교분석이 가능하여 해운시장의 각 섹터별로 주요 운임 결정 요인을 비교ㆍ평가할 수 있을 것으로 기대된다.

영문 초록

Purpose : The purpose of this study is to find major factors that affects dry bulk freight rates using the Vector Error Correction Model (VECM). Research design, data, methodology : This study employs dry bulk freight rates as dependent variable and four explanatory variables (dry bulk traffic, volume of bulk carriers, bunker price and Libor interest rates) for 22 years from 1996-2017. And methodology of this study is the regression analysis using Co-integration Test and Vector Error Correction Model. Results : The analysis results show a 6.0% increase in freight rates when world dry bulk traffic increases at 1.0%, a 4.5% decrease in freight rates when volume of bulk carriers increases at 1.0%, a 0.13% increase in freight rates when bunker price increases at 1.0%, and a 0.14% increase in freight rates when 1.0% increase in Libor interests rates, respectively. In addition, if the current freight rate is 1.0% higher than one at the long-term equilibrium point, the freight rate will fall 1.54% in consequent period and will increase 1.55% in consequent period when the current freight rate is 1.0% lower than one at long-term equilibrium, respectively. Conclusions : This study estimates the speed of convergence to long-term equilibrium, so that this study finally identifies the price adjustment mechanism that exists in the dry bulk market.
