임진왜란시 소년 柳袗의 피란 경험과 그 전승

국문 초록

이 논문은 류진이 남긴『임진록』을 바탕으로 하여 그의 피란생활을 분석한 글이다. 류진은 소년시절인 11세 때 임진왜란을 겪었다. 당시 좌의정의 아들이었던 소년 류진도 한성에서 가족들과 함께 피란길에 나섰다. 그는 임란 이후 십수년이 지난 29세 때 지난날의 피란 생활을 회고하면서 『임진록』이라는 기록을 후손에게 남겼다. 류진의 피란 역정은 한성을 출발하여 경기도와 강원도, 평안도를 거치는 먼 길이었다. 한성으로 되돌아 와서 일가족과 한 자리에 모이게 되는 데까지 약 2년이 걸렸다. 전쟁 중 가장 큰 고통에 직면하는 쪽은 어린아이들인데, 그들의 전쟁 체험과 피란 생활이 알려진 경우는 흔치 않다. 여기서는 양반가 소년의 피란 생활의 경험을 통해 소년의 눈에 비친 전쟁의 참상과 피란생활의 고난을 헤아릴 수 있었다. 그는 처음 백부 류운룡 가족을 따라 피란길에 나섰다. 피란에 나선 며칠 뒤 그는 백부의 분산책에 따라 일행과 떨어져 홀로 허수라는 사람을 따라가게 되었다. 양주에 도착하였을 때 시집간 맏누이네를 만나게 되었고, 함께 피란 생활을 하였다. 경기도와 강원도의 접경을 넘나들면서 주로 산악 지역에 머물렀는데, 그 동안 류진은 죽을 고비를 다섯 번 정도 경험하였다. 피란 생활 8개월만인 12월 말에야 아버지 류성룡이 아들을 찾기 위해 보낸 사람을 극적으로 만나게 되었다. 이후 류진은 보호를 받으며 평안도로 향하였다. 한편 류진을 데리고 피란하였던 맏누이네는 경기도 남양을 거쳐 전라도로 내려갔고, 그 전에 헤어졌던 백부네는 강원도를 거쳐 경상도 고향 근처로 무사히 내려갔다. 결국 한성에서 함께 피란을 떠나 경기도 일대에 머물다가 각각 평안도, 전라도, 경상도로 연고를 찾아 뿔뿔이 흩어져서 살 길을 모색하였던 것이다.

영문 초록

This study set out to analyze the life of Ryu Jin as a refugee based on his Yimjinrok. Japanese Invasion of Korea in 1592 broke out when he was an 11 year old boy. He was the son of the first vice-premier and started his refugee journey with his family in Hanseong. He wrote Yimjinrok 29 years after the war, recalling his life as a refugee. His refugee journey began in Hanseong, passed Gyeonggi Province and Gangwon Province, and extended to Pyeongan Province. It took him about two years to return to Hanseong to be together again with his family under one roof. It is usually children that are subjected to the greatest suffering in war, and it is not common for their war experiences and life as refugees to be known. Yimjinrok depicts the life of a boy from a noble family as a refugee and shows the horrors of war and the hardship of refugee life through the eyes of a boy. Ryu Jin first started his refugee journey with the family of Ryu Woon-dong, his uncle. After several days into the journey, his uncle decided to break up the refugee party and asked him to follow a man named Heo Su by himself. When he arrived in Yangju, he met the family of his eldest sister that married into a family in Yangju and started his refugee life with them. Crossing the border between Gyeonggi Province and Gangwon Province, he usually stayed in mountainous areas and escaped from the throes of death about five times. It was at the end of December, eight months into his refugee life, that he had a dramatic encounter with a man sent by his father Ryu Seong-ryong to find him. He then moved to Pyeongan Province under the protection of that man. Meanwhile, the family of his eldest sister, with whom Ryu Jin stayed for a while during his refugee journey, went down to Jeolla Province via Namyang, Gyeonggi Province. The family of his uncle, from whom he parted before, went down to his hometown in Gyeongsang Province safely via Gangwon Province. These findings indicate that his family and relatives started a refugee journey together in Hanseong, stayed in Gyeonggi Province, and eventually left for Pyeongan, Jeolla, and Gyeongsang Province, respectively, to find their connections, separating from one another in search of a place for survival.
