『太平經』의 ‘道’와 ‘自然’의 의미

국문 초록

중국 초기도교의 중요 경전인 『太平經』의 ‘道’와 ‘自然’ 개념은 주로 종교적 측면에서 절대적 주재자의 함의와 그 의지를 반영한다고 해석되어왔으며, 이러한 관점은 『태평경』의 ‘道畏自然’ 명제를 근거로 확립된다. 그런데 한편으로 『태평경』의 ‘道’와 ‘自然’ 개념은 선진시기 『老子』철학과 漢代 우주생성론의 이론의 관점을 수용하기 때문에, 종교와 철학의 이중적인 함의를 지닌다고 보아야 한다. 이 글은 『태평경』의 ‘道’와 ‘自然’ 개념이 『老子』철학과 漢代 우주생성론의 이론적 특성을 반영한다는 것을 전제로 두 개념을 제한적으로 분석ㆍ검토하여, 중국철학과 사상사에서 다음과 같은 의미를 지닌다고 논증했다. 『태평경』은 漢代의 氣化우주론을 수용하여 ‘元氣’는 생성의 근원이자동력으로, ‘道’는 생성을 이끄는 법칙이자 사물의 존재의 원리로 이해한다. 그리고 『太平經』의 ‘自然’은 상태나 속성을 가리키는 ‘스스로 그러함’과 ‘본래 그러함’의 의미를 지니고, 그 주체는 ‘道’와 ‘元氣’ 뿐 아니라 그로부터 파생된 만물을 포함한다. 이러한 측면에서 ‘道畏自然’의 명제는 ‘道’가 만물을 생성하는 스스로 그러한 과정, 그 과정에서의 자연스러운 법칙, 그리고 만물의 자연스러운 존재의 양태를 따른다고 해석할 수 있으며, 따라서 이 명제는 『老子』의 ‘道法自然’의 의미와 상통한다. 이러한 의미로서의 『太平經』의 ‘道’와 ‘自然’ 개념은 『老子』철학과 漢代 도가전통의 계승과 발전의 결과로 이해할 수 있으며, 중국철학사에서 『老子』철학의 발전 맥락을 파악할 수 있는 하나의 지표가 된다.

영문 초록

Scholars in the Chinese philosophy usually interpret the concept of “Dao” & “Ziran” in the early Daoistic text Taipingjing(太平經) as referring to the absolute and the will of the supreme being, and it has been established by the religious interpretation of the thesis “DaoweiZiran”(道畏自然). But the concept of “Dao” & “Ziran” in the Taipingjing reflect on the philosophy of the Laozi & the cosmogony in the Han-dynasty, so these concepts in the Taipingjing has diverse meaning of religion and philosophy itself. In the premise that these concepts actively reflect on the metaphysical theory of the Laozi & the cosmogony in the Han-dynasty, I show that in addition to the restrictively analysis and review in comparison with the Laozi & the cosmogony in the Han-dynasty, has as below theoretical distinctions. Through critically accepting the Qihua(氣化) cosmogony in the Han-dynasty, it regards “Yuan-qi(元氣)” as the cause and energy of creation, and regards “Dao” as the principle of creation and existence principle. And the concept “Ziran” presents characteristic and state of something, it has the meaning of spontaneity and what is of itself. And the subject of “Ziran” is “Dao” “Yuan-qi” and all creation. So the thesis “DaoweiZiran”(道畏自然) means that “Dao” models upon the natural process of creation, the natural principle in the creation process, but also it models upon an natural being aspect of everything. Thus the meaning of the thesis “DaoweiZiran”(道畏自然) is somewhat equal to the meaning of “DaofaZiran”(道法自然: Dao models itself upon what is of itself) in the Laozi. This analysis leads to the conclusion that the concept of “Dao” & “Ziran” in the Taipingjing is the result of developing Laozi and Daoistic theory, and it is defined as the important measure that evaluate a process of development of Laozi philosophy in the history of the Chinese philosophy.
