'여성/문학/사'에 관한 이론적 고찰

국문 초록

본고는 여성문학사 서술의 전제가 되는 여성, 여성문학, 문학사 등의 개념과 범주 등에 관한 원론적인 고찰이다. 이 연구는 한국여성문학연구가 괄목할 만한 성장을 이루었지만 개별 작가와 작품 또는 갈래 중심의 미시적인 연구에 치중하여 여성문학의 역사적 흐름에 관한 거시적인 논의가 희박하다는 문제의식에서 비롯되었다. 더구나 페미니즘뿐만 아니라 포스트콜로니얼리즘과 탈구조주의 등 20세기 후반을 주도했던 지적 흐름은 여성, 문학, 역사와 같은 기본 개념들에 대한 새로운 해석을 요구한다. 여성문학사론의 단서를 찾는 의미에서, 본고는 우선 여성, 여성문학, 여성문학사에 관한 서구 페미니즘이론의 성과에 주목하고 특히 영미페미니즘문학 전통비평의 흐름을 개관하였다. 영미여성문학사 수립을 과제로 삼았던 전통비평이 근대의 문학사 대부분이 공유했던 내러티브적 한계를 극복해 가는 과정은 한국여성문학사 서술에 앞서 주목할 대목이다. 이를 바탕으로, 향후 설계될 한국여성문학사가 지향할 방향에 대한 소견을 몇 가지 피력하였다. 우선 여성이 역사적ㆍ사회적으로 젠더화된 유동성 있는 개념임을 인지하고 그 여성이 주체가 되는 문학의 공시적ㆍ통시적 다양성을 해명한다는 것이 대전제이다. 이를 위해 상기해야 할 문학연구의 관점은 첫째, 기왕에 마련된 한국고전문학연구의 전제가 되는 광의의 문학개념이 고전과 현대를 아울러 여성문학연구의 유리한 지점이라는 것, 둘째, 텍스트중심주의에서 탈피하여 문학활동 자체를 중시해야 한다는 것, 셋째, 구술ㆍ문자행위에서 문학의 생산뿐만 아니라 소비의 측면에 주목하는 것 등이다.

영문 초록

This article is designed to pose a question that criticism of women's literature in Korea has had little concern about its 'history', and to point out the importance of historical approach to women's literature. It is true that the history or tradition of Korean literature by and about women in the past has been recovered and reinterpreted by research especially for last decade. Although so many women authors and texts were recovered, however, their relations were not fully explained. I'm not saying that Korean women's literary history had one uniform tradition with strong continuity or connection, as tradition criticism of English women's writing used to proclaim in 1970s. I don't want criticism of women's literature in Korea to repeat the mistake that early feminist literary criticism made in English literature. However, it is necessary to interpret the historical process that Korean women's literature has been developed for a long time. As the first step to theorize women's literary history, I examined the basic notions composing it, that is, women, literature, history, and literary history. They are little stable, certain notions in the late of 20th century discourse in which postmodernism and deconstruction led a fashion. Owing to such discourse in some sense, feminist literary criticism in English made a great accomplishment to degree that the 'narrow' notion of European modern literature was destructed and magnified, including what they call non-literary, non-canonical writings and folklores etc, though such a vision about literature is not a new one at all to Korean critics of classical literature. In the last chapter, I proposed a few visions for writing women's literary history. ; to magnify the notions of literature, to get out of text-oriented research and interpret the whole process of women's literary lives, and to make an attention not only to women's production of literature, but also to women's consumption or reception of it.
