본 연구는 Jigsaw 협동학습에 의한 토의ㆍ토론수업이 학습자에게 어떠한 효과가 있는지를 학습태도와 학습동기를 중심으로 살펴보았다. K대학 토익캠프 참가자 10명을 대상으로 심층면담과 수업관찰일지를 통해서 데이터를 수집하여 질적 연구방법으로 분석하였다. 연구결과는 학습태도와 학습동기로 나누어 살펴보았다. 학습태도 면에서, 학습자들은 자발적이고 열정적인 학습태도, 토의와 토론능력 및 발표력 향상, 동료 교수활동으로 자신감과 자존감 상승, 사회성 발달 등의 긍정적인 효과를 언급하였다. 반면, 동료 간의 갈등 발생 시 불편하고, 조원들의 성향과 학습의지에 따라 학습분위기가 좌우되며, 지나친 친밀감이 학습을 방해하는 부정적인 효과도 있었다. 동기적인 측면에서, 학습자들은 동료 교수활동과 적극적인 수업참여로 학습동기가 유발되었고 집단 간, 동료 간 선의의 경쟁구도로 학습동기가 강화되었다고 하였다. 그러나 학습자들은 학습준비를 제대로 하지 못했거나 무임승차자, 개별과제에 대한 부담감 등으로 학습의욕이 떨어져 학습동기가 저하되는 경험을 하였다.

영문 초록

This study examined the effects of the discussion and debate-based class in jigsaw cooperative learning settings on TOEIC learners' learning attitudes and motivations. Participants included 10 TOEIC learners in a university. The data collection depended primarily on in-depth interviews, and observation journals. This study employed a qualitative research method to reveal the effects of the discussion and debate-based TOEIC class in jigsaw cooperative learning settings. The main results of the study are as follows. In the aspects of learning attitudes, the students positively experienced active participation in class, improvement of thinking and presentation skills, enhanced self-esteem and confidence in English, and social development. However, one downfall to such a class setting was that the learners felt uncomfortable during the class activities in general when they were in some trouble with the group members. When they weren't familiar with their group members, the absence of rapport hindered the smooth execution of the task. They also said the learning atmosphere was influenced by other peers' learning styles and their learning conation. In terms of motivation, the students were motivated by peer tutoring and active participation in class. In addition, they said the competition with other teams or peers helped enhance their motivation to learn. But the assigned lessons put a lot of pressure on the learners. Free riders sometimes caused team members to lower their learning motivation. On the basis of the results of the study, it is believed that the discussion and debate-based class in jigsaw cooperative learning settings can be utilized as one of the effective teaching and learning strategies in a TOEIC class.
