역지도를 이용한 조선시대 察訪驛의 위치비정

국문 초록

본 연구는 조선시대 찰방역의 위치비정에 대해서, 역지도와 지적원도를 기초사료로 하여 분석한 것이다. 역지도는 구도상‘역토영역형’‘군현영역형’‘관아영역형’등 영역별로 세 가지로 분류되었다. 거의 모든 역지도가 풍수지리설에 의거하고 묘사되는데, 가장 사례가 많은‘역토영역형’에서는 찰방역을 혈 자리에 넣고, 직속 역토를 동일한 풍수공간에 포함시켰다. 실제 경관상에서도 찰방역은 가능한 명당자리에 입지한 것이 지적도와 현지조사 결과 밝혀졌는데, 한편 그 외의 역지도 내용은 방향, 위치관계 등에서 허구나 왜곡이 많은 것으로 나타났다. ‘군현영역형’은 원래 역토였던 장소에 나중에 읍치가 이사온 결과 찰방역과 읍치가 동거하게 된 역들에 나타나는 것으로, 역기와 읍치가 동등하게 묘사되고 있다. 실제 입지상은 읍치가 중심성을 가지고 있는데, 찰방의 위상을 중요시하는 역지도에서는 그 사실은 왜곡되고 있다. 찰방역은 독자적인 상업취락과 장터를 가지고, 또 역지도에서 묘사된 것처럼 독자적인 영역인식도 있었다. 독특한 제사도 있는 동네가 많았기에, 사회 경제적으로도 문화적으도 독립된‘유사 읍치’였다고 할 수 있다.

영문 초록

Under the Joseon dynasty, especially in the late 19th century, a number of maps on postal station compiled by Chalbang, or the headquarters of the regional postal network system, were published with topographies (Yeokji) of each regional postal network system. Numerous research works have been conducted on the postal network system itself and the economic and social history of Yeokchon, village(s) where the postal station was located, and the people living in them. However, few research results have been obtained from the viewpoint of geography. This research aims to examine both the recognition and location of station which appeared in these maps and real historic landscape in land registoration map. In the Kyujanggak of Seoul National University, at least 15 kinds of postal station maps are preserved. Several points are common to these maps. First, every map, except for the “Sageun station map,” shows only Chalbang but other belonging stations. Second, most of them illustrate not only the stations but also neighboring villages that seemed to be Yeokchon villages. Third, Chalbang and the villages are surrounded by mountains drawn by using the principle of feng-shui geomancy, while Chalbang located the best position according to feng-shui called Hyeol, even though they are often different form real location. Such characters are similar to Eupchi, center of county even if tis scale is much smaller.
