국문 초록

본고에서는 그동안 군ㆍ현 단위로부터 전국 수준에 이르기까지 다양한 공간 스케일로 제작되어 온 조선시대 고지도를 대상으로 그것이 한국의 전통지리 또는 공간인식체계로 이해되어 온 풍수의 재현물임을 드러내 보이고자 한다. 재현의 문제, 현상의 자의성, 지도 읽기 등과 관련해 고지도라는 지리적 재현물에 담겨지는 내용들을 보면 일견 정확성의 잣대로만 평가될 수 없는 다양한 의미 특성이 관련되어 있음을 알수 있다. 가령 순환ㆍ흐름의 생태중심적 인식을 반영하여 산이나 물의 흐름을 끊어짐 없이 표현한다든가, 인간의 정주공간을 구성하는 중심이자 존재의 근원으로서 주산을 방위에 상관없이 보통 북쪽으로 인식되는 지도의 위쪽에 모신다든가 하는 것이다. 이는 한국의 고지도 읽기에 있어서 그것이 제작, 통용되던 당시 공유되고 있던 풍수라는 문화적 코드가 중요하게 고려되어야 함을 제시하는 것이다.

영문 초록

The purpose of this study is to reveal that the Korean old map is just the geographic representation of fengshui which has been understood as the Korean traditional geography. The Korean old maps consist of various meanings in addition to many morphological features with reference to the geographic representation, the arbitrary relation between form and meaning of map, map reading. For example, the mountains and streams(or rivers) on the old maps are expressed in the form of being connected without cutting all together. The reason is that the Korean old maps reflected the eco-centric perspective to man and nature. And we can also identify one distinguishing feature that most main mountains(‘Jusan’) are placed just on the upside of the old maps regardless of their real locations. For such main mountains meant the center and the origin of the human settlements such as village, town and city, and even capital. Consequently, we need to take fengshui into consideration as an important cultural code for the interpretation of the Korean old maps.
