사교육이 중학생의 학업성취에 미치는 효과

국문 초록

이 연구에서는 한국교육종단연구(KELS) 자료를 사용하여 학생의 배경특성과 학습심리적 특성을 통제하고 난 후에도 학생들의 사교육 참여 경험이 학업성취도 수준에 영향을 미치는지, 그리고 이러한 변수들을 통제하고 난 후에도 3년간에 걸친 사교육 참여 패턴이 학생들의 학업성취도의 향상 정도에 영향을 미치는지를 선형 성장모형을 사용하여 분석하였다. 분석 결과, 사교육 참여 경험이 더 많은 학생들이 다른 변수들을 통제하고도 수학성취도 평균이 더 높은 것으로 나타났다. 또한, 학생들을 3년 동안의 사교육 참여 패턴에 따라 ‘지속적 사교육’ 집단과 ‘간헐적 사교육’ 집단, ‘비사교육’ 집단으로 구분한 다음에 이들 집단 간에 학생들의 학업성취도 수준에 차이가 있는지를 살펴본 결과, 세 집단 중에서 지속적 사교육 집단의 성취도가 가장 높고, 간헐적 사교육 집단이 그 다음이며, 비사교육 집단의 성취도가 가장 낮은 것으로 나타났다. 그러나 이러한 성취도 격차는 학년이 지나도 변하지 않아서 사교육을 지속적으로 받은 집단이라고 해서 다른 집단들보다 성취도가 더 많이 향상되지 않은 것으로 나타났다. 따라서 적어도 성취도 향상이라는 측면에서는 사교육 참여의 효과가 없는 것으로 확인되었다.

영문 초록

The purpose of this study is to investigate the longitudinal impact of the engagement of private tutoring on student achievement when the students'demographics (gender, prior achievement, parents' monthly income) and psychological traits (internal motivation and self-efficacy) were controlled for, using hierarchical linear growth modeling technique. Also, the effect of engagement patterns of private tutoring on students' achievement was examined. We found that students who received more private tutoring performed better than those who received it less in mathematics. In addition, we classified the students into three groups according to engagement patterns of private tutoring during three years and examined trajectories of the students' achievement. These groups represent 1) students who receive private tutoring at all measurement 2) students who receive private tutoring one or two times at any measurement 3) students who never receive private tutoring at any measurement. The results showed that the average scores of mathematics were the highest when students received private tutoring at all measurement. The next highest group was students who had private tutoring one or two times at any measurement points and the group with the lowest scores were students who never had private tutoring. However, the group difference through the trajectories of students achievement in mathematics was consistent at all times. That is, the change scores of students who received private tutoring at all measurement was not significantly higher than the change scores of other groups. Thus, we concluded that in terms of growth, there was no longitudinal effect of engagement of private tutoring on students' achievement.
