국문 초록

본 연구는 한국 지방 고등교육기관에서 학업 중인 아프리카 유학생들이 일상적으로 경험하는 미세차별(microaggressions)의 구체적 양상을 심층적으로 탐구하였다. 이를 위해 한국의 다양한 고등교 육기관에 재학 중인 아프리카 출신 유학생 5인을 대상으로 질적 사례연구를 수행하였으며, 참여자 심층면담 및 연구자 관찰일지를 통해 자료를 수집·분석하였다. 분석 결과는 Sue et al.(2007)이 제시한 미 세모욕{microinsult), 미세공격(microassault), 미 세부정(microinvalidation), 환경 적 미세차별(environmental microaggression)의 틀로 분류하였고 각각의 미세차별 유형에 대한 하위 기준을 제시하였다. 그 결 과, 아프리카 유학생들은 학교 공동체로의 편입과 소속감을 느끼지 못하거나, 언어적쩌]도적 지원의 부재와 능력주의 담론이 결합된 색맹주의(color blindness)에 의해 구조적 불평등이 지속·심화하고 있 음이 드러났다. 특히 다수자 집단의 방어기제로서 나타나는 미세부정은 차별의 문제화를 어렵게 하 고, 유학생 스스로 차별 경험을 축소·부정하게 만드는 결과를 초래하였다. 이러한 경험은 유학생들 이 한국 사회에서 안정적 정주를 모색하기보다는 서방국가로의 재이주나 본국 귀환을 고려하게 하는 요인 중 하나로 작용하고 있었다. 본 연구는 대학 내 인종적 미세차별이 개별적 일탈이 아니라제도·문화적 차원의 구조적 문제임을 밝히고, 유학생이 두려움 없이 차별 경험을 공유할 수 있는 제도적 장치 마련과 교육 구성원의 문화적 감수성 제고 교육의 필요성을 제언한다. 아울러 본 연구는유학생 수의 양적 확대를 넘어 포용적이고 공정한 교육환경 구축에 대한 실질적 논의를 촉발하는기초자료를 제공하고자 한다

영문 초록

This study explores in depth the specific forms of microaggressions experienced by African international students enrolled in regional higher education institutions in South Korea. To this end, a qualitative case study was conducted with five African students attending different universities. Data were collected and analyzed through in-depth interviews with participants and the researcher's observation journals. The findings revealed that African students primarily encountered discrimination in the forms of microinsults, microassaults, microinvalidations, and environmental microaggressions. Participants reported difficulties in integrating into the campus community and experiencing a persistent and deepening structural inequality reinforced by color-blindness that combined meritocratic discourses with a lack of linguistic and institutional support. Notably, microinvalidations often operated as a defensive mechanism of the majority group, making it difficult to name or challenge discriminatory experiences, and leading students to minimize or deny their own perceptions of discrimination. These experiences contributed to students considering re-migration to Western countries or returning to their home countries, rather than pursuing stable settlement in Korean society. This study demonstrates that racial microaggressions within universities are not isolated incidents but structural issues embedded in institutional and cultural practices. It recommends establishing systems that enable international students to safely share experiences of discrimination without fear of repercussions and providing educational opportunities to enhance cultural sensitivity among faculty and staff. By doing so, this research aims to inform practical discussions about creating an inclusive and equitable educational environment beyond the quantitative expansion of the international student population.
