프레이리의 비판적 교육학이 지닌 대안교육적 함의 : 비판적 실재론과 대안교육 전문지《민들레》를 중심으로

국문 초록

이 연구는 ‘교육이란 무엇인가?’라고 교육의 본질을 묻는 것으로부터 시작하여, 파울로 프레이리의 비판적 교육학이 지닌 대안교육적 함의를 살펴보았다. 이를 위한 분석은 크게 두 차원에서 이루어졌다. 첫째, 이론적 차원에서 프레이리의 비판적 교육학이 대안교육의 철학적 토대를 제공할 수 있는 것은 대안교육 전체를 포괄할 수 있는 일관된 교육철학을 제공하기 때문이다. 특히 그의 ‘사회적 존재론’과 ‘상호배움의 인식론’, ‘교육방법론’은 교육이론의 존재론적 전환(ontological turn)을 성취한 비판적 실재론의 교육이론과 공명한다. 둘째, 나아가 프레이리의 비판적 교육학은 《민들레》에 나타난 대안교육 실천 및 지향과 많은 상호함축성을 드러낸다. 이는 한국의 대안교육 운동이―스스로 의식하지 못했다 할지라도―일정 정도 프레이리의 교육사상을 품고 있으며 이에 기반해 실천을 이끌어왔음을 뜻한다. 따라서 프레이리의 비판적 교육학을 대안교육의 기본 틀로 적극적으로 참고할 때 대안교육운동의 이론적·실천적 적합성 또한 한층 더 제고할 수 있을 것이다. 이 연구는 이론과 사례가 상호 대화할 수 있는 공간을 마련함으로써 프레이리의 비판적 교육학이 지닌 현재성을 재조명하고, 이를 한국의 대안교육 실천과 접목한 첫 번째 본격적인 시도라는 점에서 중요한 의미가 있다. This study begins by seeking the essence of education by asking “What is education?” It examines the alternative educational implications of Freire‘s critical pedagogy by focusing on Mindle, an alternative education journal. The main findings of this study are summarized in two dimensions. First, Freire's critical pedagogy implies the potential to be consistent educational philosophy which could encompass the entire alternative education in the theoretical dimension. Specifically, his “social ontology,” “epistemology of dialectical learning,” and “educational methodology” have a lot in common with the educational philosophy of critical realism. Second, Freire's critical pedagogy reveals many mutual implications with alterative pedagogy discourses and practice shown in Mindle. This means that Korea’s alternative education movement - although not conscious of it - embraces Freire’s thought of education to some extent and it has been put into practice accordingly. Therefore, when actively referring to Freire’s critical pedagogy as the basic frame of alternative education, it could be possible to further improve the theoretical and practical relevance of the alternative education movement. This study is significant in that it is the first full-scale attempt to combine Korea’s alternative educational practice with Freire’s critical pedagogy by providing a venue for dialogue between the theory and practical cases.
