국문 초록

본 연구는 농촌의 한 작은학교가 폐교위기를 극복하고 부활하는 과정과 부활후 3년 동안 학교에서 일어난 변화를 살폈다. 연구방법은 질적연구다. 약3년간 평균 2주에 한 번꼴로 해당학교를 방문하여 학교에서 일어나는 일을 관찰하였다. 방문시 학교에 체류한 시간은 평균 3시간이었다. 본 연구를 통해 확인한 내용은 다음과 같다. 폐교위기에 처한 본 연구의 관찰대상학교(전북 진안 장승초등학교)는 2011년에 학생 모집에 초점을 맞추었다. 학생은 인근 도시에서 확보하였다. 다음 해(2012년)에는 낡은 건물을 보수하고 개·증축하는 작업이 일어났다. 이 과정에서 학교구성원의 의사를 폭넓게 수렴하였다. 그 다음 해(2013년)에는 수업을 개선하는 작업에 초점을 맞추었다. 이 연구는 폐교위기의 작은학교를 살리고자하는 교사에게 참고자료가 될 것으로 기대된다.

영문 초록

The purpose of this paper was to describe the process how a small rural school overcome the planned shut-down. The observed small rural school was Jangseung Elementary School(JES) in Jinan county of Chonbuk province. What I found in this study were as follows. In the first year, the JES focused on two things. One effort was to recruit students from nearby city area. Another effort was to make an attractive school curriculum for both parents and children. In the second year, the JES concentrated on fixing, remodeling, and adding school building in order to house the increased students and provide the best possible learning environment. In the process, ideas from teachers, students, and parents were gathered and reflected. In the third year, the JES teachers payed their attention to find a way to improve their teaching. To achieve this, teachers were engaged a workshop program called Seeing teachers teaching through children s eyes twice a month. Teacher who are interested in revitalization of a small rural school might get some insights and implications from this essay.
