Analysis of Factors Affecting Academic Performance Among Primary School Students in Kenya

국문 초록

[연구목적] 본 연구는 케냐 초등학생의 학업성취도를 예측하는 주요 변인을 탐색하고, 분석결과를 케냐의 교육·문화·사회적 맥락에서 해석하는 데에 초점을 두고 있다. [연구방법] 본 연구는 국내 NGO 단체 굿네이버스에서 2016년에 수집한 케냐 학생 데이터를 활용하여 머신러닝 기법인 랜덤 포레스트와 SHAP을 적용하여 분석을 진행하였다. [연구결과] 본 연구의 주요 분석 결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 마을에서 강한 사회자본을 형성하면서도 마을에 대한 소속감은 낮은 학생이 학업성취도가 높았다. 둘째, 이름으로 놀림을 당하거나 별명으로 불리는 학생의 학업성취도가 높았다. 셋째, 학교 수업 이외에 학습 활동에 시간을 더 많이 할애하는 학생의 학업성취도가 높았다. 마지막으로 보호자의 교육연한이 많고, 공식 언어의 사용 빈도가 높은 가정에서 지내는 학생의 학업성취도가 높은 것으로 나타났다. [결론] 본 연구는 이러한 결과를 바탕으로 케냐 초등학생의 학업성취도 습득 기제를 이해하고, 학업성취도를 높이기 위한 교육적 개입에 대해서 논의하였다.

영문 초록

[Purpose] The purpose of this study was to explore factors affecting the students' academic achievements in public primary schools in Kenya. [Method] The study utilizes data of Kenya students collected in 2016 by Good Neighbors, a local NGO and machine learning technique was applied. Random Forest and SHAP was used to analyze the data. [Results] The main findings from the study are as follows: First, students with strong social capital in their villages but a low sense of belonging to their villages had higher academic achievement. Second, students who were teased or called names had higher academic achievement. Third, students who spend more time on learning activities outside of school are more likely to succeed. Finally, students whose parents had high level of academic background and the students who use instructional language at home had high academic achievement. [Conclusion] Based on these findings, this study aims to understand the mechanisms of academic achievement acquisition among Kenyan primary school students and discuss educational interventions to improve academic achievement.
