국문 초록

[연구목적] 이 연구는 한국과 일본의 전후 교육 개혁에서 미군정의 역할을 분석하며, 개혁의 과정이 이념적 전환 및 국가재건의 방향을 어떻게 반영했는지를 탐색한다. [연구방법] 이러한 목적을 달성하기 위해 당시 미군정 및 교육 관련 기관에서 작성된 양국의 문서들을 살펴보았다. [연구결과] 양국은 미국식 6-3-3 학제와 민주적 교육 이념을 도입했지만, 식민지 경험, 미군정의 개입 정도, 국내 정치 상황의 차이로 인해 교육 개혁은 서로 다른 경로를 걸었다. 한국에서는 식민지 유산을 청산하고 언어, 문화, 민주주의를 기반으로 한 국가정체성을 재건하는 것이 개혁의 주목표였다. 반면 일본에서는 제국주의 이데올로기를 지우고 미군정의 감독 아래 평화적 민주주의를 구축하는 데 초점이 맞춰졌다. 미국은 일본에서는 매우 직접적인 역할을 수행했으나, 한국에서는 현지인들의 자율성을 더 많이 허용했다. 다만 한국의 경우 국내의 혼란으로 인해 개혁의 실행 과정에서 불협화음이 나타났다. 이러한 차이에도 불구, 양국 모두 교육을 국가재건과 현대화의 핵심 수단으로 인식하여, 민주화와 경제 성장의 기반으로 간주했다. [결론] 본 연구는 전후 교육 개혁이 해방의 도구이자 권력의 수단으로 작용했음에 주목하며, 향후 정치 문화와 시민적 가치에 지속적인 영향을 미쳤음을 확인했다.

영문 초록

[Purpose] This study examines the role of U.S. military governance in shaping postwar educational reforms in South Korea and Japan, highlighting how these reforms intersected with ideological transformation and national reconstruction. [Methods] To this end, we analyzed contemporaneous documents produced by the U.S. Military Government as well as relevant educational institutions in both countries. [Results] Both countries adopted the American 6-3-3 school system and democratic education ideals, but their reforms diverged due to distinct colonial legacies, U.S. intervention, and domestic political conditions. In South Korea, reforms aimed to dismantle colonial legacies and rebuild a national identity based on language, culture, and democracy. In Japan, the focus was on eliminating imperial ideologies and establishing a pacifist democracy under U.S. supervision. While the U.S. played a more hands-on role in Japan, Korea’s reform allowed for greater input from local agency, though domestic unrest led to inconsistencies in implementation. Despite such differences, both countries viewed education as key to rebuilding and modernization. [Conclusion] ]This study underscores that postwar education reforms were both tools of liberation and instruments of power, with lasting impacts on political cultures and civic values.
