국문 초록

본 연구는 군인의 극단주의 급진화 과정을 탐색하고 이를 예방하기 위한 정책적 개입 방안을 제시한다. 미국에서 군인은 전투 경험과 무기 사용 능력으로 인해 극우 극단주의 단체의 주요 모집 대상이 되어 왔으며, 실제로 다수의 전직 군인이 테러 조직의 지도층에 참여한 사례가 보고되었다. 급진화는 불명예 전역이나 사회 적응 실패로 정체성이 손상될 때 촉발되며, 군 복무 중 형성되는 폭력성, 하위문화, 외상후스트레스장애(PTSD)와 같은 위험 요인이 중요한 영향을 미친다. 본 연구는 기존 연구를 바탕으로 급진화 경로를 네 가지 유형으로 분류하고, 입대 전 심사에서 전역 후 사회 적응까지 다섯 개의 정책 개입 시점을 도출하였다. 결론적으로, 군인의 급진화는 단일 요인이 아닌 복합적인 사회·심리적 요인에 의해 발생하며, 이를 차단하기 위해서는 생애주기별 맞춤형 예방과 대응이 필요함을 제언한다.

영문 초록

This study explores the radicalization process of military personnel into violent extremism and proposes policy interventions for its prevention. Military personnel have garnered significant attention from far-right extremist groups due to their combat experience and proficiency in handling weapons. There have been numerous cases where former soldiers assumed leadership roles in terrorist organizations. Radicalization typically occurs when individuals suffer identity disruption, such as dishonorable discharge or failure to adapt to civilian life. Risk factors formed during military service—such as violent tendencies, sub-cultural immersion, and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD)—have also contributed to this phenomenon. Based on prior research, this study categorizes radicalization pathways into four types and identifies five points of policy intervention, ranging from pre-enlistment screening to post-discharge social reintegration. The findings suggest that military radicalization is not caused by a single factor but arises from a complex interplay of social and psychological factors. Accordingly, the study emphasizes the need for customized preventive and responsive strategies across the military life cycle.
